Van Gogh painting stolen from Rothschild by Nazis sells for over $35 million, breaking recordA watercolor painting by Vincent Van Gogh that was stolen by the Nazis from its Jewish owner during the Holocaust was sold at auction for $35,855,000 Thursday, breaking the record for the largest sum ever paid for a Van Gogh painting on paper at auction.
The painting, called Meules de blé in French of Wheatstacks in English, was completed by Van Gogh in 1888 and features a colorful wheat harvest scene.
It had been purchased by Max Meirowsky, a German Jewish art collector, in 1913. When Meirowsky left Germany for Amsterdam in the face of growing antisemitism in 1938, he left the painting with an art dealer who sold it to Alexandrine de Rothschild of the famed banking family. When Rothschild left Germany for Switzerland, her art collection was seized by the Nazis.
The paintings whereabouts between the end of World War II and the 1970s are unknown, but in 1979, American businessman Ed Cox purchased the painting at a gallery in New York.

This story is even more interesting to me because of the latest "Blacklist" episode....SPOILER....
A Van Gogh was being hidden and Red knew where it was and returned it to the original owner's daughter, now 90 and the lead singer in a death metal band. Her seeing the picture, and her reaction, was moving. The actress was really phenomenal in portraying how a Holocaust survivor might react upon the return of a family heirloom.

(5,371 posts)2. The medium really is irrelevant...
...the NFT (non-fungible token) by BEEPLE earlier this year sold for 69 million at auction.
Beeple's artwork was a (tremendously glorified) jpg.

(8,105 posts)3. Watercolors traditionally don't sell for much.

before the 60's for something to be fine art, it had to be made to survive for at least 100 years.
works on paper werent considered fine art.
doesnt rly hold any more, but you are correct that watercolors still usually dont fetch a very high price. people still dont like the fragility of paper.
but one like this- different story. tbh i had no idea there were any van gogh watercolors.
