#OnThisDay in 1933, King Christian of Denmark celebrated the 100th anniversary

of the Crystal Synagogue in Copenhagen to show his allyship with Jews.
Yet it didn't stop there.
King Christian and the Danish government refused all Nazi demands to deport Jews. When the Nazis established martial law to resolve the "Jewish question" in 1943, not only did Denmark smuggle most of the Jews to Sweden, they protected the 476 Jews deported to Theresienstadt.
Danes sent food and other provisions while the Danish Red Cross constantly demanded welfare checks on all Danish Jews imprisoned at Theresienstadt.
Sadly, 52 Danish Jews died there. Yet, the remaining Jews were likely spared deportation to Auschwitz due to Danish efforts.
In the end, 90% of Denmark's Jewish population survived the Shoah. That is what true allyship looks like.
