Related: About this forum(Jewish Group) Anti-Semitism is now just another part of the Republican party's accepted principles
Among the many norms that the Republican Party has thrown overboard in its embrace of Trumpism is its condemnation of anti-Semitism.
Condemning someone who engaged in anti-Semitic tropes used to be as easy as condemning white supremacists marching with torches. Then, of course, Donald Trump reminded us that there are some very fine people among those white supremacists, so it was open gameliterallyon everyone.
As a result, the Republican Party has now become the playground of white grievance. Inevitably, thats led to a mainstreaming of anti-Semitism in the GOP ranks.
The most extreme example is the partys candidate for governor in Pennsylvania, Doug Mastriano. As a Christian nationalist, Mastriano is one of the most extreme candidates on the ballot this year (which says a lot).

(6,285 posts)but we Jews aren't liked by either side of the spectrum.
The right is just more overt about it. They will come out and say "The Jews won't replace us."
The left will couch it in more political terms: "Before Israel we didn't have an enemy in the Middle East. Now, we don't have a friend." That simply means, at least to me, if it weren't for those damn Jews, everything in the Middle East would be fine.
As Tom Lehrer said in the song "National Brotherhood Week,"
Well the Catholics and the Protestants
And the Protestants hate the Catholics
And the Hindus hate the Muslims
And everybody hates the Jews

(54,854 posts)It is also true that many more people than one might think are anti-Semitic or espouse anti-Semitism on occasion. It is disgusting when we hear, "Oh, so and so CAN'T be anti-Semitic, they have Jewish family members!" It is something I hear from both sides when trying to "protect" an anti-Semite or someone from an accusation of anti-Semitism.

(8,541 posts)antisemitic, racist, xenophobic, anti-gay...but Trump brought that half whispered hate out of the shadows and into the White House and legitimized it...veiled stereotypical tropes became overt...Charlottesville "Jews will not replace us".."good people on both sides"...racial hate morphed into "shit hole countries", babies in cages, the wall, the muslim ban..all with no Republican Party pushback..
as a child I remember our next door neighbor, a pillar of the community...city alderman, chairman of the local Republican Party, bank president, Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year...stand in his driveway hurling vile antisemitic insults at my parents, Holocaust survivors, and threatening to burn down my father's "Jew store"... we moved...
