(Jewish Group)Shellfish dumped on UC Berkeley's Jewish fraternity house on first Shabbat of semester

Local police are investigating after a Jewish fraternity at the University of California, Berkeley, reported finding hundreds of shellfish dumped across its property.

The shellfish were also thrown through a window at Berkeley’s chapter of Alpha Epsilon Pi, in what the fraternity is calling “an act of antisemitism vandalism.”

“We go outside, we saw crayfish had been thrown all over our deck, all over the side driveway, through the windows into someone’s room and scattered all around the backyard,” said Jadon Gershon-Friedberg, a Berkeley senior and the AEPi chapter president, who lives in the fraternity house. A fraternity brother had noticed a half-dozen people with a bucket approach the house just before 1 a.m., he said.

Gershon-Friedberg and other fraternity brothers immediately checked around neighboring fraternity houses to see whether shellfish had been dumped on their property too. They believe theirs was the only target.

But, nowadays - it's just as likely we're talking 35 and 40 year old fat boy militia ..

...well, then it does seem like it may be more of a targeted situation.

that the Jewish fraternity house wasn't targeted? If so, apologies for not being clearer. College populations have proven quite capable of generating plenty of racist and antisemitic crap on their own. (plus the fact that they are often recruiting grounds for the supremacist swine)

...more info from the article stated it was the only house hit. Though, it was self-reported and, the possibility another house was hit and didn't report still exists. But, recent events at Berkley, the holiday, and the nature of the house, makes me think it was likely a targeted attack. Sometimes, as time passes, more is revealed and it will either confirm the anti-Semitism or it will be down classed to a prank.

When the heat got turned up by news reports and police investigating, some of the assholes turned themselves in. They thought it would be funny. Allegedly, they didn't understand the ramifications of the food or the timing....yeah, OK.

My reasoning was other houses weren't hit (that may or may not be true, that seems unclear) and it was Berkley, which has been a hotbed of anti-Semitism as of late. However, while this was a "prank", anti-Semitism is still a real problem and incidents like this should always be investigated, but as a Jew, it is also understandable how and why we would see the initial "attack" was anti-Semitic.

And, regardless of what the little cockroaches are saying now - I think the Jewish fraternity was clearly targeted - and I 'suspect' that the shellfish and the holiday were a knowing part of the 'joke.'

Might have been college hi-jinks (wink, wink) - but it was also clearly aimed at the 'Jewish kids.' The fraternity that executed this distasteful little piece of theater ought to be at the very least placed under scrutiny and probation.

And, as we have both noted - it's not as if college campuses are not hotbeds of disgusting ideology - and as such, more than aware of what is happening (and what it means).
