People exposed to weedkiller chemical have cancer biomarkers in urine - study

The Guardian

New research by top US government scientists has found that people exposed to the widely used weedkilling chemical glyphosate have biomarkers in their urine linked to the development of cancer and other diseases.

The study, published last week in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, measured glyphosate levels in the urine of farmers and other study participants and determined that high levels of the pesticide were associated with signs of a reaction in the body called oxidative stress, a condition that causes damage to DNA.

Oxidative stress is considered by health experts as a key characteristic of carcinogens.

The authors of the paper – 10 scientists with the National Institutes of Health and two from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) – concluded that their study “contributes to the weight of evidence supporting an association between glyphosate exposure and oxidative stress in humans”.

so it will never be banned.

(Cue the glyphosphate crusaders who always show up to defend the ubiquitous use of Roundup and Roundup-ready crops. To them, all that cancer is just a byproduct of our terrific modern agriculture.)

" People exposed to weedkiller chemical have cancer" Stage 4 lymphoma to be exact, followed by leukemia.

However, that is good news IF those biomarkers can be discovered by testing.

Sending her some DU vibes (((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((( )))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

In my small neighborhood, just about everyone was using Roundup 15-20 years ago, except for me. And just about every adult woman in the houses surrounding mine developed breast cancer, except me. One of my neighbors unfortunately died from it.

I refuse to use any kind of herbicides or pesticides in my yard. I lost a beloved dog to cancer when she was only 7. She had a habit of licking puddles of water everywhere we went. It never occurred to me that she might have been affected by yard chemicals in the rain puddles.

unfortunately, we were assured that it was safe, and that was before we began being untrustful of corporations. Hell, the Government wouldn't allow anything deadly to be marketed to millions, right?

Drinking as well. A poor diet. Too much red meat. Insufficient exercise. TOO much exercise. Vaping. Unsurprisingly, all of these things are linked to cancer.

Given how 70% of all Americans are overweight or obese, and most of the remainder either drink, smoke, or vape, you'd have to have a VERY carefully constructed study to tease the glyphosate-associated response out from all the other ones, to see how much of an impact it has.
