an earthquake had happened though he had been woken up in the middle of the night by his alarm clock falling on him. He passed away two years ago and I always want to reach out to his partner when I hear news of Japan. Fortunately she lives nowhere near today's earthquake.

had bought a new car. She was fine, her car was fine but the bridge between her car and the mainland went kaput. Bad times.
