Still Silly, but Improved Cartoon of a Carbon Neutral System.
This paper is open to the public to read: Combustion, Chemistry, and Carbon Neutrality Katharina Kohse-Höinghaus Chemical Reviews 2023 123 (8), 5139-5219.
The author is German.
If it wasn't tragic, it would be amusing to see a German resident write about carbon neutrality, since Germany is a country that phased out carbon free energy, nuclear energy, and replaced it with coal:
The last 30 days of German power generation:
Electricity Map, Germany
Perhaps though, Dr. Kohse-Höinghaus is not quite as insane as her government, since she produces this figure in it, filled with all kinds of stuff that won't work, but the much demonized but only form of energy that will work:
The caption:
Figure 14. Schematic of an integrated system that can provide essential energy services without adding CO2 to the atmosphere (AS). Colors indicate the dominant role of specific technologies and processes. Green: electricity generation and transmission; blue: hydrogen production and transport; purple: production and transport of CxHyOz compounds including hydrocarbons and oxygenated fuels; orange: ammonia production and transport; red: carbon management; black: end uses of energy and materials. One is invited to count the number of sources of
primary energy in this Rube Goldberg diagram, and if one can count to one, one can also count the number of sustainable, workable, and scalable forms of primary energy in the diagram. It's the one banned in coal burning hell, Germany, nuclear energy.
The section on OME
x fuels, including the simplest (and best) DME, while brief, is worth a read.
Have a nice workweek.
