Human ancestor less of a lean marathon runner

Scientists found that Homo erectus had a large but short ribcage, similar to Neanderthals, rather than the longer, flatter chest of modern humans

· New research on the Turkana Boy, the most complete skeleton of a fossil human ancestor ever found, is changing our understanding of its species Homo erectus

· Using imaging techniques, a three-dimensional virtual ribcage of the Turkana Boy has been reconstructed and used to predict the shape of the adult ribcage and the breathing pattern of this adolescent fossil

· Scientists found that Homo erectus had a large but short ribcage, similar to Neanderthals, rather than the longer, flatter chest of modern humans
