Yesterday I was driving through the wilds of SE MS, lost the NPR station, and found Janet Parshall

If you don't know who that is, just imagine an annoying Xtian fundy who knows how you should live better than you do.
With a radio show.

Janet;

Hateful person

Anyway....
She had another fundy of similar ilk on, a Mr. Robert Jeffress of Faux News fame.

Mr. Jeffress;

Weasel looking dirtbag

Mr. Jeffress was carrying on about the recent Supreme Court Rulings (of course) and said that (paraphrasing)

"This world is out of control"

Really? Out of control, is it?

No, you horses ass, it is just falling out of YOUR control and those like you.

This was of course, followed by claims that we are in "the last days" yadda, yadda blah, blah, blah ad nauseum. All because a specific group of people that he had been heretofore allowed to discriminate against with impunity can finally do something he has been allowed to do forever.

It was at that point I started shouting at the radio and decided that silence was better for my blood pressure!

The world is out of control. What a complete load of fucking bullshit.

I've said this before and I'll say it again, in spite of the move toward marriage equality, things are going to get worse before they get a whole lot better. People like Mr. Jeffress do not like it ONE LITTLE BIT that their influence is on the wane and they will fight back, tooth and nail, hammer and tong, until it becomes clear that the rest of humanity (or at least a sizable number of rational people) just do not care to be subject to their strict view of how we all should live. All the while they will scream that they are being persecuted because they don't get to tell you how completely fucking awful you are.

Just remember, if you live your life like you see fit or advocate for others to be able to do the same, and that advocacy is at odds with the Mr. Jeffress's of the world, then the world is therefore "out of control"

Good. May it ever be so.

You begin to see just why they elect assholes who sell them out when you listen to fundy radio down there. When that's all you hear, you tend to believe it.

Whole sections of the country are getting to be just like it, too. No alternative messages are getting through, at all.

It's why scuttling the Fairness Doctrine (and Reagan vetoed it 3 times after Congress passed it again) has done so much damage. It allowed propagandists funded by billionaires to control everything a lot of people in this country hear.

Preachers are the worst of the bad lot.

It's not just the south.

A few years ago, I commuted regularly between Cleveland, OH and points south within the state. The "dead zones" in which the only programming available was AM talk radio were really scary.

Reagan's dead. Fuck him anyway.

Not exactly a bastion of critical thinking.

I can say the same for a lot of my home state (Iowa). And South Dakota and Nebraska and Missouri and Kansas and...

AM radio, and now the internet, keeps these people mired in their stupidity.

As mentioned in the other posts, radio shows like hers and evangelical personalities like hers are not strictly a southern thing.

Don't forget that Harold Camping, famous for saying the 2nd coming was going to take place May 21st, 2011 (he has since shrugged off this mortal coil) broadcast from the Bay Area.

when it didn't happen for him, either. Most of them just tell their sheep that they misheard and go on as if nothing was supposed to happen. For that reason alone, Camping is in a class all by himself.

I mentioned it in my post, also. Large swaths of the central part of the country are nothing but bible, right wing talk, and a few C&W stations run remotely.

What has happened to media in much of this country is horrific. There is no other word to describe it.

Back when I was doing a lot more cross country driving than I am now, I would listen to old
"Brother Camping" late at night. No matter where you are, if you get to the point where hardly any radio stations are coming in, the ones that are seem to be exclusively Christian programming.

Once a young female caller, who was concerned that today's music might lead her astray, was told by Old Weird Harold that she should "neeeeeveeeer" (drawn out as he used to do) listen to any music at all that didn't glorify god.

She had to listen to specific works of Bach, Mozart and the like that were commissioned by the church if she wanted to be free from temptation!

That got me doing one of these inside my cab,

as much rolling as could be done, anyway!

He was amusing, if nothing else.

Mr. Jeffress on the other hand, is just a whiny dickbird who can't stand the fact that he doesn't always get his way anymore.

During the school year, I listen to some of her show on the drive home-I like to know my enemies.

There is a recurring theme about how gay marriage, etc. infringes upon THEIR rights-it never registers what flaming hypocrites they are being.

To her credit--her show is halfway listenable and she has on some smart guests-even if rarely. She even has her hubby do twice-monthly "debates" with Barry Lynn--who does a great job of forcefully defending separating church from state.

She does have that common and grating christian arrogance that allows her to laugh off opposition with a chuckle. It must be sooo great to know you are right all of the time!

it's good SOMEONE divine handled the job!

Honestly, I was perfectly happy listening to "Click and Clack" and "This American Life", it's just that I drove to far from Mobile! All of the sudden, the strongest signal on the NPR end of the dial was good ol' Janet!

I have other ways of accessing media while on the road, but fumbling with the devices while on a two-lane in heavy traffic isn't a good idea!

As the voice of the believers becomes more obviously outlandish and counter-intuitive, more come the the obvious conclusion that it's all entirely bullshit.

Not everyone, I suppose. There will always be those who are willing and able to settle in Jonestown.

Still, some days I dare to hope that the human race will survive long enough to witness the last days of fossilized, ancient superstitions.
