Another religious airline incident (Canada)

(Posted in the Atheists/Agnostics Group, in case that isn't clear.)

Porter Airlines: Ultra-Orthodox Jew horrified when he is assigned a seat beside a VHH (Vagina-Having Human). Starts ordering other passengers to "Change!" Woman refuses to move or otherwise accomodate his Bronze Age bullshit.

I would have been tempted to have some fun with this clown, since he would probably sit beside me as a fellow Penis-Having-Human:

"Hey, on the last leg of this flight, a woman was sitting in the same seat Your Sacred Ass is occupying now. I noticed some small red spots on the seat cushion, and I don't think they are hydraulic fluid..."

Yes, I know. I'm a horrible person. I may even Alert on myself...

Just stick him in one of those hard sided rolling cages to make it legal and accommodate him that way. Just hope nobody is transporting a pet pig that day.

And someone refused to sit next to an Orthodox Jew because their religion considered them unclean. The Jewish community would be screaming anti-semitism at the top of their lungs. Or if someone refused to sit next to a passenger because they were black. We wouldn't even be having this conversation. They'd be told to shut the fuck up and take their seat or get off the plane. But somehow, when gawd tells you to be a blatant sexist, it's perfectly ok.

I can just see the outrage now. And to be honest, it would be justified. Just like it is in this case. I don't recall anything in the Bible saying that flying is allowed.

It would be just as wrong as what happened to this woman (and others like her). If it were reversed, there would be those making excuses for it as well. Personally, I don't see this as an example of sexism, but rather an example of misogyny. Quite frankly, I don't think I have ever seen anyone make excuses at this site for this situation (or similar ones over the years), if anything, it is used as an example by a small few of how bad Jews are.

There are plenty of DUers who think that they airlines should be doing whatever they can to accommodate these bigoted attitudes, instead of just telling them to sit in their seat and stop being assholes.

"If it were reversed, there would be those making excuses for it as well."

Whereas I haven't seen anyone making excuses or expecting the passenger kvetching to get special treatment (the ones I remember were sarcastic suggestions). So, why don't you point me to these "plenty" via threads (not specific posts, just the threads where this happened).

One prolific DUer even suggested that airlines profile passengers based on their names to see if someone has a better chance of being an Orthodox Jew.

Nor does it prove your claim I wasn't paying close attention. It simply means I didn't see it. There are thousands of threads at DU monthly, I only click on a select few, and given this topic, I don't even know I have seen all those threads. For a long time, I didn't even have "Religion" added to "My Subscriptions". Trust me, I am well aware of things happening here and my not seeing it or noticing it, because I see it in reverse in regards to anti-Semitism, which more than a few seem to think doesn't exist at this site.

13. Another one! Saudi King vs French Police
Fri Jul 31, 2015, 07:34 AM
Jul 2015

His Awesome And Induplicable Supreme Whozis, Guardian of the 2.5 Holy Shrines* Etc., King Salman of Saudi Arabia, is currently vacationing on a French beach. With 1,000 of his wives, kids and assorted Royal Dickholders.

The French govt. has police officers guarding the beach area.

King Salman has issued an obiter dickheadum to the French govt. - NO FEMALE COPS are allowed on his guard detail, lest they see His Awesomeness swimming. Which might shake the foundations of the Kaaba or something.

This idiocy has apparently attracted the attention of FEMEN. I sure hope so. We're in for some major lulz if a bunch of half-nekkid Ukrainian feminists show up on the beach to chat with the king of Saudi Arabia.

http://www.vocativ.com/news/216341/saudi-king-demands-french-police-remove-female-officers/

*One of the many official titles for the Saudi King used to be "Guardian of the 3 Holy Shrines" - Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem. That got changed to "TWO Holy Shrines" after June 1967. I just split the difference and give him 2.5 shrines.

Your religious beliefs don't give you carte blanche to insist that those around you accommodate your beliefs. They don't give you the right to disrespect others or treat them like they're unclean. If you can't exist in polite society and follow the same rules as everyone else then isolate yourself and don't travel on public conveyances, but don't expect others to defer to your every whim.

No one should accommodate people like this. If this was a member of the Christian Identity religion insisting that they won't sit next to a black person there's no way an airline would accommodate them, why is someone who refuses to sit next to a woman any different?
