Atheists & Agnostics

...claim he doesn't use a phone or a computer.
This was in the context of being 'unattached'.
You can damn well bet the staff he relies on does. His claim rang hollow to me bordering on charlatan.
Just sayin'.

(80,708 posts)What I know about the Dalai Lama- admittedly not a ton- is he probably could laugh at himself about it, too.
He did have one quote about "God"- something to the effect of "God", or the concept thereof, is a small mystery. The great mystery is the self.
I would agree with that sentiment, and I'm about as much of an Atheist as there is.
SHRED
(28,136 posts)...we've got these things called egos.
It's just when so-called "leaders" act like they are somehow past theirs I get a bit dismayed. Mostly for their followers who buy it.

(80,708 posts)I hear you. the true gurus teach people to listen to themselves, instead of gurus.
SHRED
(28,136 posts)..."there will be no following".
"You kick people in their feelings and help them with their being."
"Be good and then feel good...in that order."
Among other profundities.

(17,505 posts)Well, the lightning comes first, and the thunder is just a sound. How is it supposed to "get" you?

(80,708 posts)But I take it to mean that there are certain basic, obvious inevitabilities to existence that we can't do anything about.

(17,505 posts)A bad one that looks like the author doesn't know what thunder and lightning are.

(80,708 posts)I think Robert Hunter is one of the greatest poet/lyricists of the past century, but hey- your mileage may vary. Like licorice, as they say.
And yes, I understand what thunder and lightning are.

There's a lot of folk religion around some sects of Buddhism. Those are largely incompatible with atheism.

(17,505 posts)Well, since the Buddha isn't a god (until some of his followers turned him into one)....
Chiquitita
(752 posts)to show he actually once made this claim? Seems made up to me, especially since he admits to noticing having attachments (to things like his wrist watch) and never claims to be a superior person. Anyway, Buddhist philosophy doesn't have anything against using computer technology. It's like a pen, just more sophisticated. Using technology doesn't mean you have "attachment" necessarily.

It was an interview on TV. It may have been 60 Minutes. It's been awhile sorry.
I remember how it struck me and my wife. We called bullshit right away.

I just can't abide with the whole "following" concept I guess.
