Atheists & Agnostics

The maternal unit likes to riddle me with: How can an atheist exist if there is no god?
Can someone untwist that enough to help with a cogent response? I always get twisted up on the illogic of the query and sputter off about how nonsensical it is.

(7,532 posts)How can there be a god if there is no god creator? Ad infinitum.
That's a meaningless question. Why can't an atheist exist without god?
If god existed, would he cease to exist if there were no believers?

(7,911 posts)Ask her how can a Christian exist if there is no Odin? Makes as much sense, which is to say, none at all.
BBG
(2,960 posts)That was the first response but then I always got stuck on explaining what was so funny.

(13,610 posts)it's about the argument. If the argument exists then a term for those who take a side in the argument can exist. If there is no argument over the existance of a deity then atheists would not exist because theists and atheists would not be necessary terms.
The term will always exist as long as the argument of a deity's existance is part of human history.
The atheism only defines where I exist in relation to the surreality of belief in a god entity. Thanks, this is the best answer to aid me in responding to the silly riddle.

(24,795 posts)I don't know. And neither do you, the Pope, Billy Graham or anyone else.
The difference between you and me is I am content with that, and you are in a lifelong quest for the answer.

(13,610 posts)How can there be an argument about the existance of a god if the term "god" is not defined unambiguously? Therefore, how can I be non anything that has no definition? Maybe I'm adefinitionlessideologies. It's only an argument about a concept with named characters. You can do the same in theoretical physics.

(2,107 posts)My current status is atheist-adjacent-agnostic. Anytime God decides to switch off his cloaking device, or we find a haiku written in turtle DNA, my status is open to change. You could tell her something like that. She might find that angle tolerable. She just needs to know she created a discerning individual, not a damaged one.
