Atheists & Agnostics
Related: About this forumwhat really pushed me to atheism was finding out most of what I learned as a kid
were lies shoved on me by some group or person who had something to gain from me accepting their lies.
Mostly in areas like social studies and religion as a kid but then into the kind of "common sense" as an adult that was all crap.
As the internet became more and more available and more and more information was available, I did a lot of searching to find out what was really true.
Since this is the atheist forum I will focus on religion.
I was raised Catholic and as I got older I left the church, but didn't exactly turn atheist right away. But when information became more available I just kept digging. Most everything I read pointed to religion as totally bogus. My most recent discovery is that early hebrews were actually polytheistic, not monotheistic as the claim is always made. Monotheism evolved.
I sit here now about 15 years into my quest and feel like there were a bunch of "christians" whose sole purpose in life was to steal the life from youth for their purpose. I so wish I could confront some of these people and ask them "Why?"
Why did you scare me with concepts of hell? and hurting my parents? and that sex was bad? and so on and on and on. Sometimes when I think about it I just get mad and feel so cheated.
Thanks for listening to my primal scream!

(52,265 posts)I have realozed that almost every atheist I know personally was raised in the Catholic faith. For some reason that particular religion really pushes people over the edge. I ordered comminion wafers for an appetizer to bring to my family's mock Easter dinner. I served them with salmon dip and they were a real hit.

A HERETIC I AM
(24,587 posts)meaning restricted its use, teaching etc until the age of 18 at least and coupled that with an education system like the Scandinavian countries have, religious beliefs would fall to virtually nothing inside 20 years

We could come up with craft projects using unwanted bibles -- like monitor stands and coffee tables. I always wanted a bible with a derringer inside it like in the movies. A plastic one would be fine (derringer, not bible).

(2,864 posts)I can vividly remember being drug to church at the age of five, in the late 70's bible belt. My other sibling and I HATED it. It was a perfectly nice summer Sunday outside and i wanted to spend the day outdoors playing in the dirt with my Hot Wheels, instead of putting on a suit and tie and sitting around a bunch of people i didn't know.
After both of us throwing a huge fit and made to go anyway, i observed something once we were inside:
1. People became zombies. They were simply repeating patterns that they had been taught since they were small.
2. I seriously detested church music and having to sing it. It grates my nerves to this day.
After 3 attempts of dragging us there, they gave up. Dad tried to quasi-punish us by making us help him around the house on Sunday mornings which ended up backfiring because we thought it was fun
As i got older i noticed that religion was used to justify hate and to control people. At about 17, in the full height of the "Satanic Panic" in the 1980's, i was talked into attending a "rock music is bad" seminar. At this point in my life, "Led Zeppelin 2" was my everything and it was expanding my musical tastes into other bands of the era. This music provided me an escape from bullying, questions on my sexuality/gender, and it just put me in a good mood.
So i go to this thing, and as it progresses i'm getting angry, i mean fucking MAD, at all the bullshit i'm hearing. Hands clenched in fists of rage as Don McLean would say. Satanic backwards masking, satanic ceremonies taking place in the recording studio, and if you keep listening to this music you will do heroin, commit suicide and burn in hell....
Fuck you and the horse you rode in on. I saw it for what it was: a power grab! These people wanted power over youth/people.
At the age of 17, the seed was planted. After numerous years of searching and reading, i discovered all of it was a truck load of prime USDA bullshit. At the age of 29, my monogrammed bible that was given to me as high school graduation present, got destroyed and placed into a recycle bin.

(63,201 posts)I know I sure am - I look at the practicing Christians I know - most I know don't practice - and I think of how bound up their lives must be with ridiculous rules. Imagine if they were set free. But at some point you commit to keeping those chains.
thanks for your story.
