Pansy

Purple pansies.

Pansies are symbols of thoughtfulness and love.

History

The pansy got its name from the French word pensée "thought", and was imported into Late Middle English as a name of viola in the mid-15th century, as the flower was regarded as a symbol of remembrance.

Freethought

The pansy has been a long time symbol for freethought. Freethought is a philosophical viewpoint that holds that beliefs should be formed on the basis of science and logic. This states that they should not be influenced by emotion, authority, or tradition. Someone who believes in freethought is known as a freethinker.

The pansy became the freethought symbol because of its name and the way it looks.
