I mean other than the Nietzschean argument?
I see it beyond his lament that the enlightenment killed god in our minds
I see it as a necessary evolutionary aspect in which we throw off the chains of "magic thinking" and move towards a more positivist world

(179 posts)Humans have struggled since the beginning to categorize the world and its mysteries. We try our best but lack the ontology, as John Mack once said. Forays into the unknowable are discouraged by the scientific method therfore it's just better to move on and drop it. But once in a while someone decides to walk back to the house from the compost heap a little slower than usual and gets a glimpse and a taste of the divine.

This sacrificial act liberated humanity from the chains of transcendent religion by unifying the spirit of god with the real world. Of course it took around 1700 years for the enlightenment to get around the stultifying power of the church, and 300 years later we are still struggling to keep those chains off.
