Although the story has circulated for a long time, the most famous retelling comes from the Stephen Hawking book A Brief History of Time:

"A well-known scientist (some say it was Bertrand Russell) once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the Earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the centre of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy.
"At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: 'What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant turtle.'
"The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, 'What is the turtle standing on?'
"'You're very clever, young man, very clever,' said the old lady. 'But it's turtles all the way down.'"

in a Universe we did not make. Did it make itself? Then IT is God... Enough said to dispel the notion that we know why or even how we got here. Keep up the speculation, because these answers are just as whacked as extreme evangelical madness.

the who or what made the maker of it?

None of it makes any difference to me. I do find it interesting to study.

9. the universe simply IS

...there was no single creator. The universe just IS and always has BEEN. It is likely that the universe goes on forever and ever. There is no end to it.

I could not wrap my mind around this years ago. Now, I just accept it as reality and while space exploration is good, we will never find the "end" of the universe. We may find some arbitrary middle-point where we think the Big Bang originated, but it is arbitrary.

It matters not how far down or within one goes, finding turtles or creators. Either way the constant is the 'one who knows'.
If you plumb the depths of reality you will find that you are there.

All that can be known is called reality and that which can not be known is said to not exist.
There is one thing, however, that nobody can 'know'. One can never know one's own non-existence.
