Actually the JREF has been moved to CA, but Randi is still here in Broward. Our CFI chapter runs a monthly meet-up with Randi. He is also a cosponsor of our annual Darwin and Carl Sagan events.

Randi is a national treasure.

He was giving a lecture in Tulsa where I live for a couple more weeks. I was the third person in the room - the other two were a couple, and we stared at each other because I guess we both looked familiar to each other. Finally, the girl asked, "Are you... Gay Monkey Man?"

Before moving to Tulsa, I did some grad work at Oklahoma State University, and cheap entertainment on Friday afternoons was to sit and watch (and mock) the evangelist that came to yell at us and damn us to hell. During one of his screeds, he got into homosexuals, and I asked him to explain why if animals have no souls (I took a chance that was his belief) and thus can't sin, why is homosexuality found all over the animal kingdom? I said it was obviously genetic for them and so must be genetic for humans. The guy had to actually be quiet for about a minute before his response which was, "God gave man dominion over the Earth, and man's sin covers the Earth so it was humanity's fault the animals acted like that." "Hold on," I said. "There are two gay monkeys going at it right now in the rain forest, and it's 'man's fault?'" At that point he chose to ignore me, but every now and then I would yell, "Tell us about the gay monkeys, damn it!" Every now and then, I would get someone I didn't know greeting me with, "Hey, Gay Monkey Man," while walking around campus.

Anyway, Randi heard her question and asked the origin, and I told him the above story. He smiled and chuckled, which pleased me like the Randi fan-boy I am.

I mean, it is a richly deserving target, but it appears to me that there is so much more that one can focus on, as well.
