(92,516 posts)By Saturday. And the high 40s a couple days later.
I don't know if I will sleep much tonight, it's kind of a "total alert" sort of situation.
Further north in the state, near the border, it's probably going to get around -40F. Canada is even colder. I think about Canada when it gets this cold and remember it's even colder there.

(92,516 posts)People who are not used to this kind of severe cold can really blow it without realizing it.
Definitely ditch the cotton base layers, they hold moisture and can freeze, one of the biggest things to know and stay hydrated.

(92,516 posts)Certainly makes the choice to psuedo-hibernate easy when it gets intense like this. I'm enjoying a nice hot cup of nettle tea right now, feels good.

(92,516 posts)A couple days ago, they're both accustomed to hard winter and function well until it's colder than -35F, The Toyota doesn't want to start about there and I won't ask it to, the BMW will do if I have an emergency but once it's -10F, I'm home until it warms up.

(92,516 posts)No garage at this place but I do sometimes keep one of them in a storage compartment but not right now. Yeah, all kinds of things break at these temps, including tools and machine parts, don't even mention plastic. Windshields crack just exhaling in the back seat. Yeah, it's hardly worth going outside for any reason other than an emergency.

(92,516 posts)-25F but the ones that cracked on me were at -35F and one at -42F, I wasn't going anywhere, the windshields just cracked, one when I was in the back looking for something and I guess the heat of my breath was enough change to do it at -42. Worst I've seen is -50F, don't care to see that again.
I'm in the western edge of this air mass so as it moves east, please, everyone, don't take risks, stay warm and indoors!

2naSalit
(92,516 posts)That's the plan.
It's the kind of cold that you feel when you come back inside, it stays in your clothes so it's best to peel them off immediately when you get inside.

Do stay warm, if you have to go out, don't wear cotton, especially next to skin. Have wind protection no matter what, cover your head and face, wear an oil based something on your face, I would say olive oil in a pinch. Water based lotion will freeze in your pores. Cover every inch of skin, wear a hood and cover your face well. I wear goggles.
Anyway, try to not have to go out. Schools are canceled here as are many events so people can just stay home.

(24,299 posts)Just pointing out that they knew the value of what you said about being oiled up against cold temps.
I just heard a radio weather update for Western NY. For Friday we will have the same rain and sudden dramatic temperature drop that other places have experienced. Then it gets really interesting.
Blizzard warning for Buffalo and Niagara falls from 7 am Friday to 1 am Monday with winds around 70 mph and a foot of snow. Surrounding counties will have 40 to 50 mph winds and varying amounts of snow from a few inches to a foot and a half. Temps near zero , wind chill at -20 or lower.

(92,516 posts)From my mentor, she actually would save butter stick wrappers and use the residual on her hands. She showed me a recipe that I make every year for winter skin protection, it could be called a salve, it's just olive oil infused with some healthy for skin herbs and a little beeswax, works great, helps undo wrinkles for a few hours too!

Did my food shopping yesterday.

(92,516 posts)A few days ago and made sure I had it all together by Monday so I could just stay home. I have a contingency shelter if thing shut down here, it's just getting down the hill to the friend's house, about six blocks, don't want to traumatize my vehicles in these temps, it's best if you don't try to start them in this kind of cold.
Take care, this will pass eventually.

(5,276 posts)Looks like I have to deal with it though I play pretty high level Women's tennis and am due at my indoor place at 9 tomorrow morning about a 15-20 minute drive away. Meanwhile the forecast in Central Ohio keeps getting worse. Guess I'll bundle up, bring along a heavy blanket just in case and shiver on out there.

(92,516 posts)Last Feb I had a dental appt that I couldn't cancel, made it weeks in advance, and it turned out to be the coldest day of the winter. I had to drive 45 miles while it was -25F. In most cars you can't have heat and defrost too, fortunately I had heated seat and steering wheel!
It was only a little warmer for the drive home. I have no plans for anything like that this year. I plan to just stay home when winter storm come up from now on.
