It's been snowing since yesterday afternoon in the Montana Mountains and surrounding areas, coming right out of the north with the arctic air mass moving southward. It was windy and snowing rather hard. I moved my vehicle for the plow around noon, just before it really started snowing. It stopped for a couple hours but now, early Saturday morning, it is snowing hard and coming sideways out of the east, visibility ~ 1,000ft at best.
We might get 12 -15" Not that much, but it's really wet.
The grader is out clearing the drifts, getting ready for the subzero freeze that will follow. Once this wet snow sets, it will be semi-permanent for a while... at least until it gets above +32F for a week or so.
The best part is the addition to the meager snow pack. The bad part is the avalanche danger, many warnings are already up in popular recreation areas.
How's the winter going in your area?

(92,677 posts)I think they are going to that system due to too many people on the landscape and roads. Not sure when that starts, though.

(27,285 posts)The snow is supposed to start tonight. Of course, the last two storms came in far below the forecast, so who knows. This week's storm forecast was for for 3 to 6" and I think we got about 2.
My car is in the garage, I'm well stocked with food for me and the kitcats and there is firewood stacked in the garage. I anticipate a very cozy day, tomorrow. My only 'outing' will be to, maybe, clear the drive and walk way.

(92,677 posts)I do have a storage unit a couple miles away where I usually keep my Toyota, but I've had it out since it is now designated the winter vehicle because of the clearance and standard trans and braking systems. Runs on cheap gas too, unlike the other one that requires premium. I love that thing.
It's going to be into the subzero temps tomorrow and into Monday morning. I go to a friend's on Sunday afternoon/evenings to make dinner and play games. They have a wood stove so I plan on having a cozy time there for a good part of the chill time. It's only 3/4 of a mile there so I don't really count it as "going out".
I do have to clear my porch and walkway but I'll wait until the drifting is over, there's always one at the bottom of the steps.
At least it looks like winter around here again. It gets kind of stressful when the season is off.

(34,074 posts)Have 3 inches on the ground with 3 to 6 more in the next 24.
The only bad part for me is the 3 staggered snow plow that pile it all up in front of my driveway.

(10,779 posts)Looks like the storm hitting you may get to Michigan. From no snow on ground to maybe 4 down now and the promise of maybe 4 more. Cold will settle in also looking at single digits for a couple days. Wish it was for longer
ticks were bad last year, a sustained cold would lower the risk.
Love to get the inches youre getting. Wife and I love snowshoeing it makes not a lot of sense to make trails in a couple inches of snow. In heavier snow years we blaze trails through the forest around us following the deer trails for hiking and cross country skiing. Neighbors love them and the animals think its an expressway.

(92,677 posts)Since Christmas here, on the other side of the pass they had about a foot one the ground last week.
Since the snow has been coming in from two directions I got curious, now that it's getting light out, and looked out the door so I could see the porch and walkway. There is snow caked all over the entire surface of everything on the porch, about two inches, and at the bottom of the porch steps is a really wild drift with razor sharp peaks. I can walk between it and the wall, amazingly. The drift is about thigh high and more snow than I plan to mess with.
Even though we got about a foot, it may all be in South Dakota by tomorrow!

(2,000 posts)We haven't had any snow or ice yet here; seems like the moisture has been hitting just before or after a cold snap so it's just rain.
The mountain towns north of us have had some snow, but nothing substantial.
The cold fronts seem to come more often, but we get nice temps in the 50's and 60's in between the 20 and 30 degree days.
We usually get one good snow a year, a foot or more. Used to be in February, but over 20 years I've seen many December and January snows instead. We could get some in in February this year. It's also been known to snow in March or April, always a rare and memorable event. Maybe we'll see snow on Easter this year.

(29,779 posts)in Durham NC. When we first moved to NC in 2007, there would be one or two good snowstorms every winter. Coming from LA, with its absence of seasons, I liked it. We're on the I think it is 4th winter without any snow aside from some flurries that didn't stay on the ground as long as it took to touch it.
It might be the 5th year. 2018 was the year I slipped on black ice while scraping my car and broke a wrist.
This area where I live seems somehow to avoid almost all severe weather. I should not complain. But seasons were one thing I really liked about NC back in the day, now I feel like I don't even have that. If it's warm it's raining, if it's cold it's clear. AND since 2010 republicans have been ruining the place as fast as they can.
I hope you're well positioned to curl up and enjoy the snow!

(92,677 posts)Have not been normal since the mid 1990s.
I have good spot to stay warm, I have a view, and as long as the power stays on, all's good.
