D.C. area forecast: Rainy week with big, windy storms Tuesday and Friday.

A wind advisory and flood watch have been posted for Tuesday afternoon and night

The wind advisory is in effect from 3 p.m. Tuesday to 1 a.m. Wednesday for sustained winds (from east and southeast) at 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph. Note that these gusts are higher than indicated in the forecast below and are around the upper limit of what we might expect. But they are possible if thunderstorms develop, which could draw down exceptionally strong winds above the ground. The combination of the heavy rain, which will loosen soils, and such winds could lead to downed trees and power outages.
The flood watch is in effect from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning. The Weather Service projects up to 2 to 3 inches of rain, with localized amounts potentially nearing 4 inches. “Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations,” it writes. “Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. Low-water crossings may be flooded.”
