(26,166 posts)...at 23 back in 1978 was that she found it comforting rather than distressing when people shared memories of him. It helped her some to know that he was not forgotten.

(4,950 posts)My brother was the closest person who knew me the best, the longest of anyone that was alive-- which means I am the only one who carries the earliest memories of his life. He was my fellow traveler, the one who survived the 1970s and 1980s with me. We have a younger sister but she had a very different experience than we did. I love my sister, don't get me wrong but me and my brother... we were there before her. So him exiting without warning was very traumatic. I still am not over it. It helps in a way that he lived in a different state and I can imagine him still there but the not communicating is what makes me very sad still, years later. I help out his grandchild and that helps a little. So I get you.

(340 posts)Every new grief has the ability to reawaken any/every old grief.
Grief is not a mental illness even though it sure as hell can *feel* like one (probably for the above reason).
Blessings upon you and your family.
