Law enforcement stays busy during Rally, with traffic citations, alcohol and drug arrests topping the list

The 2021 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally officially opens today (Friday, Aug. 6.) It runs through Sunday, Aug. 15.

That’s the official Rally. In reality, bikers and people eager to enjoy the magnificent Black Hills, concerts and parties, have been arriving for a week or more. While the Rally is over on Aug. 15, bikes will roar for days after that.

It’s outgrown its borders, exceeded its limits. The record crowd was estimated at 750,000, set in 2015. That may be broken this year, with people eager to get out and about after the pandemic.

While it’s a good time for hundreds of thousands of people, and a late-summer bonanza for businesses, for some people, the Rally takes a rough turn.

Law enforcement is kept busy during the event. In 2020, there were 1,334 citations issued, just two fewer than in 2019, during the official Rally, Aug. 8-16.
