South Dakota Republicans battling each other, which could mean Democrats could finally win an election
Gov. Kristi Noem leads one of the most Republican states in the country.
Noem, who is riding high in polls in her state, has never lost an election. She served four terms in Congress before being elected governor in 2018. The South Dakota Legislature has supermajorities in both chambers, with Republicans holding 94 of 105 seats. No Democrat holds statewide office.
Republicans aren’t quietly getting things done, however. They have turned Pierre into a hotbed of tribal warfare.
A state representative and former speaker of the House, Steve Haugaard, is challenging Noem in the June primary. When he announced his campaign in November, Haugaard said Noem wasn’t focused on her job.
“We need a full-time governor who puts South Dakotans first. Period,” he said.
