Partisan primaries might change in South Dakota: Here's what to know about Amendment H

South Dakota’s open primaries are up for debate in next week’s election.

Amendment H, one of seven amendments on South Dakota’s ballot, would replace our state’s existing partisan primary elections with top-two primary elections, in which all candidates are on the same ballot and the top two who receive the most votes would advance to the general election, regardless of their party affiliations.

This means a candidate can list any party on the ballot, and voters may vote for any candidate on the ballot.
