South Dakotans could vote on medically assisted suicide

South Dakotans could decide whether to allow medically assisted suicide on the 2018 ballot.

The initiative, if approved, would allow terminally ill patients over the age of 18 to opt to end their life if they are confirmed to be suffering from a life-threatening condition and are of sound mind.

If two doctors agree that a patient will perish from their condition within six months and a state-licensed psychiatrist or psychologist finds a person to be competent to make the decision, a pharmacist could administer the patient a drug that would end his or her life.

The proposal would need 13,871 valid signatures to appear on the ballot in 2018. And at that time a majority of South Dakota voters would have to approve it to make it state law.
