Religious protection bill supporters, critics hope to sway gov's decision

PIERRE — A proposal weighing religious freedom against freedom from discrimination falls now to Gov. Dennis Daugaard.

The Republican governor will have the final say on Senate Bill 149, a proposal to provide protections for religious or faith-based adoption agencies that deny child placement to unmarried or same-sex couples.

And groups on either side of the issue hope they can help make up his mind.

Both supporters and opponents of the proposal have sent out calls to action for members of church congregations, conservative Christian advocacy groups, LGBT communities and allies, civil liberty proponents and others.
