One third of South Dakota's budget at stake in federal budget debate

As Congress prepares to take up President Donald Trump's budget proposal, more than a third of South Dakota's projected revenue could be affected.

The president's budget, which will be amended by Congress, calls for wide-ranging cuts to several programs South Dakota counts on for funding.

State budget planners say they're confident that the state's spending plan approved earlier this year won't be derailed, but others worry about the lack of contingency plan.

South Dakota took in $1.65 billion in federal funds during the fiscal year that ended June 30. The state is counting on more than $1.64 billion in federal funds for the fiscal year that started July 1 and runs through June 30, 2018.
