Lawmakers push for tax credit for workforce housing developers

South Dakota lawmakers hope that approving a tax break for developers could spur the construction of workforce housing across the state.

A summer study tasked with addressing the gap in housing for those with 80 percent of the median income or below advanced a bill Thursday that would allow developers to receive tax refunds or credits paid in constructing an affordable housing facility.

The draft proposal advanced on a 4-3 vote with six lawmakers excused from the meeting. It moves now to the Executive Board and will be taken up during the 2018 legislative session.

Lawmakers expressed concerns about the measure prior to its passage but emphasized a desire to continue the conversation about tax incentives during the 2018 session.
