South Dakota a 'standout' in limiting voters' ability to bring issues to the ballot

The 2016 election was the tipping point.

South Dakota voters passed a sweeping campaign finance and ethics law, and legislators quickly struck it down.

They have been chipping away at voters' ability to bring issues to the ballot ever since.

A year after Initiated Measure 22's demise, the Legislature passed a dozen bills tightening the reins on the initiative and referendum process.

Some changes are small, like requiring a uniform font size for ballot measure petitions. But all told, the onslaught of bills puts South Dakota in a league of its own in terms of restricting direct democracy.

1. It's YOUR fault

I lived many years in SD. Voters there have inherited the Republican systems brought on by the ignorant selection of the (R) when filling out their ballots. When Democrats are providing farm subsidies (and Republicans vote against it), these farmers stupidly go to the polls and vote against the hand that feeds them by selecting Republicans. It's resulted in a complete loss of voter ability to voice opposing positions. They asked for this, and they got it.
