Our GOP leaders are irrational to oppose Biden’s infrastructure bill. This thing will be a bonanza for South Dakota.
South Dakota’s government analysts in Pierre, aka The South Dakota Legislative Research Council, yesterday released its analysis of how much our state will receive from President Biden’s $2.3 trillion American Jobs Act, often referred to as his “infrastructure bill.” The act, of course, has yet to become law, but as the political fight over Biden’s venture starts heating up, you have to wonder why South Dakota’s synchronized GOP leadership is fighting against passage of the bill.
Best guess? They’re politically terrified that its implementation will be so successful as to make a powerful case for Joe Biden and his Democratic Party to continue their domination of the White House and Congress for the next few elections. They’re desperately trying to head off what could become a political catastrophe for them.
In doing so, are they really working for the best interests of their state? I don’t think so. According to the SDLRC, we’ll receive something on the order of $3.4 billion to repair our decaying infrastructure and pay for other endeavors that will better the quality of life for all South Dakotans. The uniformity of their opposing arguments tells me that our GOP leadership isn’t motivated by independent judgement. Trying to stem the flow of that kind of money smacks of consistency with the national GOP’s antagonism to Joe Biden’s plan, largely because Republicans oppose the increase in corporate taxes that are intended, along with tax hikes for individuals making more than $400 thousand a year, to pay for the Jobs Act.
In dissing the plan, Sens. John Thune and Mike Rounds, Rep. Dusty Johnson and Gov. Kristi Noem (all seen above in a montage from Dakota News Now) seem to overlook the immediate economic windfall that their state of South Dakota will experience if Biden’s plan passes relatively intact. On a macro scale, Business Insider, along with most of the literature that’s out there, reports that the plan should accelerate (“supercharge” is the word Dallas Fed president Robert Kaplan used in the Business Insider piece) growth.
