2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumIs there an attempted right wing take over going on here?
I keep seeing ads for Michelle Malkin, the extreme right wing columnist popping up, and there are threads ON
DU defending Trump voters.
Also there are calls to woo white working class voters who voted for Trump and his blatantly racist campaign, who apparently heard his racist dog whistles loud and clear and responded with their votes.
We also just got shut down by hackers, a shot across the bow if there ever was one.
What's going on? Is there an attempt to normalize Trumps anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim, misogynistic, racist message and move DU to the right?

(152,119 posts)I think the ads are bundled in a group.
Every time someone clicks on an ad, money flows to DU. So it costs the right wingers money to advertise here.
You could talk to Skinner in Ask The Administrators Group about this. He'll tell you what's going on.
On edit: Here's the link to that group: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=forum&id=1259

(13,189 posts)triggers "Trump"-type ads. From whichever side is using the name "Trump" in an ad. That's just how ads work on the internet now. They're trying to give you "what you're interested in", but it's selected by a computer, not a person.
As has been suggested, buying a star for as little as a coupla bucks will stop the ads, as will downloading Adblocker.

I'm just wondering if there is a subtle infiltration of right wing ads and OPs excusing Trump's racist voters going on here?
We've learned since the election that the Russians paid an army of trolls to post Trump-favoring OPs on sites during the campaign, including liberal ones.
It's not farfetched to think that could be continuing.

(368 posts)Will it help us long-term if we write off Trump voters who voted for Obama once and at times, twice? Clearly some Democrats and independents who voted for Trump will support our party if we have the right candidate at the right time, the right message, the right outreach, the right optics. I am as disappointed in this outcome but we have two choices. A) Throw a temper tantrum and permanently push away these voters by calling them every name in the book or B) Play it smart and learn, organize, and act. If you're disappointed in them for hurting the Democratic party, should you not look in the mirror and see that further pushing people away is hurting the Democratic party as well?
brush
(57,616 posts)or voters who love Trump's dog whistle racism?
Let me think about that.
OK, I did. Nope, don't want them.
Gotta live with myself, and other Dems, hopefully ON THE SAME PAGE as far as being intolerant of racists.

(368 posts)Quite frankly, I do not care if Satan himself voted for the Democrats. All I give a hoot about is that a Democrat won their race so the issues that I care about are taking center stage. As an LGBT citizen, I do not have the luxury to push people away so that my party continues to stay in the minority while Republicans strip me of my basic dignity. We can win voters back, not the horrible racist, homophobic ones, but the ones legitimately struggling to put food on the table, the ones who have to set up a GoFundMe page so they don't die.
brush
(57,616 posts)LGBTQ issues? Those issues would be push aside quickly if we try to appease people unfavorable to diversity and inclusiveness.
Come on now. We can not compromise on that. Racist are not just anti-POC, they are anti-gay as well. Here's a link of Trump's appointments who will deal with LGBTQ issues. I don't want these people anywhere near the Dem party: http://www.democraticunderground.com/10028317546
And we are not in the minority in the country. Don't think that for a minute.
Hillary won millions more votes in what I suspect is a tampered-with vote count favoring an out-and-out racist, aided unprecedentedly by a foreign power, a rogue FBI chief and a fugitive leaker all working to deny the actual vote leader the victory.
Many seem to have accepted and not care that a foreign dictator meddled in our election and affected the outcome, and are now backbiting our party when what happened right before out eyes is a coup by the Russians who got in their preferred candidate, by hook and crook.

(368 posts)A lot of them are the racist, homophobic, sexist, violent people that you are describing. But how can you group people who voted for Obama twice in with them? They voted for a black man twice, once AFTER he announced he supported same-sex marriage. We're to believe they're racist and homophobic? Independents outnumber registered Democrats and Republicans. These are people we can get if we address their economic concerns, their fears, their hopes, how we have failed them. We stand strong against racism, homophobia, sexism, horrible economic policies from Republicans while at the same time reflecting and admitting that in some areas, we can do better as well. People within our party aren't criticizing it because we hate it. We're doing it because we love it enough to want it to succeed and work for the greatest number of people.
brush
(57,616 posts)or anyone who voted for him because of his racist dog whistles.
He campaigned on hate and they still voted for him.
If they come to the Dem party they will pull it to the right and LGBTQ issues will be shoved aside.

(26,984 posts)Even if they voted despicably in the past election. Writing off huge swaths of the electorate is a recipe for guaranteed, continual defeat. I don't consider that a RW position. I consider it a "living in the real world" position.
I haven't seen anyone defending the act of voting for Trump, and if they did, the post would get hidden, and they'd likely be banned. Some people have advocated the notion that not all Trump voters are irretrievably evil, and think that it may be worthwhile to try to understand why some blocs of traditionally Democratic voters went for a racist, orange troglodyte this cycle. I personally think that is a worthwhile question to examine. If you want to believe that makes me part of a RW conspiracy here, you are certainly entitled to that opinion.
Some posters are taking other posters words and twisting them into a different meaning, and then crying "RW" and "racism". At least that's what it looks like to me.
If you don't want to see the ads, buying a star will get rid of them.
My answer to your question is, IMO, no. But then, I might be one of "them".
