Mook: Clinton's 'deplorables' comment 'definitely could have alienated' votersEugene Scott

"Hillary apologized right away after that and said that she misspoke and that she regretted the comment. That's something that Donald Trump wouldn't do, you know," he told CNN's Jake Tapper during a special edition of CNN's "State of the Union," filmed at Harvard University's Institute of Politics in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The event, "War Stories: Inside Campaign 2016," also included Trump's campaign manager Kellyanne Conway and was the first time that the two managers appeared together alone since the presidential campaign.
On a special assignment from the Clinton campaign, Diane Hessan studied how undecided voters were responding to the campaign.
She wrote an op-ed in the Boston Globe sharing reflections from her study, which showed the reaction to the "deplorables" was stronger than when FBI Director James Comey sent a letter to Congress saying they were probing to see if additional emails on the laptop of one her top aides could have an impact on a closed investigation to Clinton's use of a primary email server.
The deplorable comment didn't just hurt Mrs. Clinton's chances, it gave Trump supporters something to rally around.

(4,387 posts)...the difference being she did it herself in the general but had surrogates do it during the primary. It's almost like that's a bad idea or something.

(40,016 posts)Obama made a similar gaffe in 2008 (clinging to God and guns) but it didn't hurt him much. At the end of the day, many people who might have taken offense saw an upside in going with someone new and promising and were willing to give him a pass whereas with Hillary the same type of voter had already had a negative view of her candidacy and it hurt her. She needed to walk a finer line.

(6,208 posts)Trump? ."I could walk out in the street and shoot someone and my followers would still vote fore me?" There are so many. Notice how the right can lie and slander to infinity and never be called on it by the press but let Hillary or a left leader say anything without it being scrutinized to infinity.

(54,796 posts)but given that those voters admired Trump's rude remarks, it's hard to believe it had much if any of an impact.

(20,999 posts)...friends of ours here in Arizona, he is a Exec Sales guy and travels Arizona and Mexico. He supported tRump because he believes "he will shake things up in Washington." A day or two after the deplorables comment, he already was having t-shirts printed and was having business cards printed with "deplorables" language. He pointed to the comment as "evidence" of just how out-of-touch Clinton was. Mind you, this is an intelligent guy, probably makes at least 100K a year. He voted for Bill Clinton TWICE.
Just days after the deporables comment, I was in Walmart, turned the corner and saw matching deplorables shirts on husband and wife.
Deplorables became: (1) a rallying cry; (2) signage- t-shirts, coffee mugs, etc. and (3) "verification" as to Clinton out-of-touch.
And speaking of my friend, he and his wife thought tRump's comments about women were "foul and ill-advised," but not a game changer for them.
When you are already thoroughly indoctrinated with Hillary Hate, her opponent could do no wrong, and she can do no good. And no, it does NOT make sense.
