2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHere is what I'm going to do on January 20, 23rd and on and on.
I was hurt for the first 3 days or so over the outcome of the election. But there is nothing I can do about it. Trump won, according to the rules currently in place.
No recount will overturn the election, not enough electors will change their vote. It's over, and I won't drive myself mad over the outcome and continuously wonder what could have been.
I put up a thread a few days ago about going to have Christmas dinner with relatives. I'm going with an open mind because I want to LISTEN and LEARN why they voted the way they did, IF the topic of politics comes up. I'm not going to ask why they voted the way they did, and have them start to answer and I interrupt them and tell them they're wrong. I won't learn anything that way. These are people who voted for Gore, Kerry, Obama twice and this time, they went Trump. By the way, they're in Pennsylvania which you might have heard, we lost.
Now, you can argue until the cows come home why Hillary lost, but know this, unless we understand the enemy, we'll continue to lose. If I were to go in there and start calling them racists, as many here do without personally knowing the people they're talking about, tempers would flare and nothing would get accomplished other than hurt feelings. They're family and i won't have that happen.
On January 20, I'm going to put on my big boy pants and go to work. I have bills to pay. On the 23rd, I'll do the same thing, and on from there.
And I'll look forward to 2018.
Take from this what you will.

(8,337 posts)I don't personally know any Trump supporters (or the few that did vote for him may not have dared tell me). Yup I live in an east coast academic bubble.
I would really like to hear what they said to you.

(740 posts)...often when one person has an open mind and the other person does not, your views can shift in their direction.
Of course if attacking someone for their views they will often dig in and not budge at all.

(7,581 posts)Maybe your family isnt racist. Maybe they are just sexist. And im sorry, theres no excuse to vote for a pussy grabbing, bankruptcy declaring absolute moron. I just said I'm done with my husbands family, good Catholic denying racists that they are. Screw them.
