2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumAfter this nightmare, I am now inclined toward states rights. I know this is terribly selfish,
but I don't want these robber barons messing with California

(42,649 posts)California is not an independent country, so what infects some states can spread to others. Better to promote the robust California economy and contrast it to Texas, touted by the GOP as a GOP paradise.
California, with high growth and high taxes, is a huge contrast to Texas with its large number of uninsured working class people and huge number of minimum wage jobs.
Make that point to the media and to politicians.

(42,649 posts)And California should be promoted as an example of how liberal ideas promote a healthier economy.

(96,572 posts)yes, we all need to stick together on this one, no matter what state we are from

(1,429 posts)If 2018 and 2020 go in the following manner:
2018 - Rethug House majority barely dented and a 60 (or near) seat Rethug Senate Majority, and state races barely shift
2020- Shitgibbon is re-elected, Rethugs retain large majorities at all state levels (including legislatures, thus post 2020 Census redistricting guarantees Rethug US House till at least 2032), plus House and Senate
and
SCOTUS- Ginsberg dies or retires, Breyer goes too, (with added bad possible bonus of Kennedy gone too) and Trump picks those 2 or 3 MORE seats (thus 7-2 RW majority for 10, 15, 20 years)
Then California is insane to not start the process of looking at secession. The entire West coast in fact, maybe other hard Blue states as well. If all those above possibilities actually occur, the USA will take multiple decades to just get back to where they are now. It will be head top to to foot bottom a militaristic, oligarchic gangster capitalist, racist, homophobic, misogynistic, out of control fascist theocracy. De jure, not just de facto, with systemic turn-around well beyond a mere decade or 2 event horizon of correction.
Added fact to show slow rate of change (remember this was supposedly a huge CHANGE election):
In 2016 House elections, a total of 380 of the 393 House incumbents seeking re-election won, resulting in an incumbency rate of 96.7%.
If those all above, I repeat, occur, my words are, far from hyperbolic, actually an understatement.

(1,429 posts)it will take an immense amount of planning, hopefully coordination with other states who wish to leave as well, and a billion tonnes of steel for the collective nerves of all involved. Like I said, IF my scenarios (and ALL but the POTUS and thus SCOTUS partially if Ginsberg and Breyer hold on till 2021) actually occur, the pressure will be so so intense on Blue states. The theocracy/oligarchy will systematically and legally crush you and all minorities everywhere on so many levels 200 million heads will be reeling as their bodies, souls, hopes, dreams, and freedom to live a happy life are ground to dust with the full weight of the captured republic law behind it.
They literally want to turn the country into an xian mandated and buttressed technotronic plantation combined with a military empire unleashed like nothing before (save WW1 and WW2). Christian neo-feudalism, backed up by a bankster/multi-national controlled scientific dictatorship in faux-democratic disguise.

(1,173 posts)I think secession could, in theory be accomplished. When South Carolina seceded, the confederacy decided to keep federal property in the state for itself. So you have a state helping itself to federal property. Lincoln was trying to supply Fort Sumter, the SC militia was trying to starve the federal soldiers out. One of my ancestors was Lincoln's last ditch agent sent to try to work out a supply deal with the State of South Carolina. He was unable to accomplish his mission, thus began the shooting.
So, in my opinion, a state like CA could secede with the blessing of the federal government if they either forfeit federal property or compensate for it. Also, there would have to be agreements to allow shipping ports to remain viable and secure for the rest of the countries benefit. I do not believe that CA or any other state for that matter is in any kind of financial position to pull this off as it would be a massive expense.
