White man taunts black comedian: Trumps victory entitles me to call you a ni***r

"Comedian Jon Laster was performing at the Gotham Comedy Club in Chelsea, Manhattan just a week after the election when he reached “a boiling point” of personal frustration, Rolling Stone reports.

Laster recounted how at the end of the night’s sets, a white middle-aged individual approached him at the bar and said, “Man you were really funny, and you’re black!”

The man continued, “Since Trump won the election, there’s a lot America needs to reconsider. We need to put that ‘politically correct’ stuff to bed; now I should be able to call you ‘n-word.'”

Laster then recounted how he had to hold himself back from punching the man. After the incident, he wrote on his Facebook, “I’ve spent the entire weekend disgusted that we have to deal with this and disgusted that I didn’t break his jaw [and] it’s not an Alabama problem.”

This is becoming more common place.

To borrow a phrase from the New York Sun editorial of September 21, 1897,

Yes, Virginia, racism is alive and well in America

they had several cast members leave because they couldnt take it any more. they just put out a public statement, and are putting signs up at the theater that they will not tolerate hate.
trouble w improv is that it is about not thinking, just blurting it out.

sad fucking days.

http://chicagoist.com/2016/10/26/comedian_tells_us_why_he_quit_dream.php

I now have post-traumatic stress disorder from being on stage. I'm taking a step back and concentrating on writing. The climate right now is unlike anything I've ever experienced before. It's coming to a boiling point, and I knew i had to get out of it before things got too ugly. I had the same exact physical and psychological manifestation as when I was abused as a child. It felt exactly the same. It felt like I was helpless and powerless. But I put all this aside because this was the dream. I thought, I can't be knocked down by these haters. But this isn't about me, and I need to preserve myself and get out of an abusive situation while I can.

Chicagoist: You were one of four cast members out of six who left the show, "A Red Line Runs Through It." What was that like?

when we elected a President of color, but trump has really emboldened them. As a white person, I feel that I must be alert and speak out loudly and forcefully. Chastisement and anger from the victims will not make the same impression as it would coming from a fellow white person. I have no illusions that I could change any minds and hearts, or even induce shame, but I would like to drive it underground instead of having them spew their filth in public. We are in this together, and maybe together we can deflect a lot of the blows.

This guy doesn't want "politically correct," he said so himself. He chose to say the wrong thing to the wrong person, he chose for his body to be found in the woods somewhere. It might not happen tomorrow, but it will very likely happen one day. But it's what he chose.

they would have voted for Bernie. The reason they voted for trump is because they are racists , homophobes , sexist etc. The country is WAY more racist than people think.

There is one silver lining in my opinion. People are emboldened to show you who they are. Granted, they might have been somebody different, and could still change if we had a kinder, gentler, more nurturing society...But this is who they were before Trump.

The only difference is they were hiding it in polite society..not its effects, just the root of those effects. It was hard to know who you were talking to, nor was there a chance to directly address that racism or its underlying assumptions. In the wake of Trump, its a little harder to pretend as a society that we've moved beyond racism in this country. as ridiculous as that always was. Maybe some redress will come out of this, as people who don't think they themselves are racist--they just manage to miss all of the micro-aggressions and institutional biases that they themselves are immersed in and contribute to on a daily basis--wake up to the reality that it is very much still alive and thriving.
