I've never been able to pronounce the words, the spelling always throws me. But the ideas are worth pondering.

(23,802 posts)Oh, but what I'd give to live in Scotland! Especially NOW.
I was once on the island of Mull and heard a number of people speaking Gaelic. Of course I couldn't understand anything, but I was pleased to hear that (on the islands at least) Gaelic is still the everyday language.
The signs (banks, etc.) were also in Gaelic/English. It really was fascinating!

(9,171 posts)and was the weather good?
I can see some elements of French (gaullic?) in some of the phrases, like "mo chara" vs "mon cher".

(23,802 posts)Yes, I went over as a tourist-- it was strange, but as the train pulled into Edinburgh, I had the feeling I was "coming home." That probably sounds ridiculous but it's true.
Going to Mull was part of a tour of Scotland-- frankly, I liked the mainland the best. Did you know that there are over 750 islands that are part of Scotland? No doubt most are very small, but still!

Ever see Local Hero? Great movie set in northern Scotland.

(23,802 posts)I'm frankly scared to death but have no choice but to carry on.
Yes, Local Hero is one of my favorites-- also, the soundtrack is superb!
Cheers

(9,171 posts)So HE should be worried. There are millions more of us than there are of them.
& Mark Knopfler is a top quality musician.

(23,802 posts)I try to focus on my life and what's good about it because it helps take some of the edge off.
And, absolutely, Knopfler is tops! I miss Dire Straits.

(9,171 posts)The world is still beautiful. There are billions of good people. Good is everywhere, and they're trying to attack all good, all at once. Everything the bad guys do is to daunt and intimidate us. But we ARE America, it's an honor to be who and where we are, at this particular time, opposing those nazis.
Everyone doesn't have to stand up against them face to face, but everyone is capable of opposing them in many ways. The more of us that act up and pop off, the less manageable we are to them.
Bruce Lee said that when you feel scared, going into a fight, it's a good thing. It's your body making adrenaline. Just focus on breathing, deep, slow. Don't pay attention to what they're saying, the faces and gestures they make. (That's all their stupid statements on tv, dRumpf's tweets, alt-right propaganda efforts, etc. That garbage is them 'murder mouthing' their opponents before a fight. They're cowards, they have to think they beat their opponent before they'll throw their first punch.) Focus on your center, and take in the whole periphery.
I think I read (maybe Rolling Stone) that Mark and Dave had a falling out that was never mended. A shame. But Mark still does solo efforts. Tracker in '15. I never got to see them in concert, but love the Alchemy versions of their songs.
Thank you so much for those wise words-- I will undoubtedly need to access them in future, so I have bookmarked it.
I did see Dire Straits once-- their very last concert tour. It was kind of disappointing, to be honest. Mark seemed out of sorts and literally did not look up at the audience once. I guess he was so burned out.
I would love to have seen Alchemy live-- such an exuberant concert! One of the best live albums ever!!
Apparently Mark and Dave have been estranged for some time-- too bad.
Have a great rest-of-the-week!
