Justice Department Says City Board of Elections Violated Federal Law in Brooklyn Voter Purge

The United States Department of Justice is taking on the New York City Board of Elections for improperly purging nearly 120,000 Brooklyn voters before the April 2016 presidential primary.

In a motion filed in federal court Thursday, the DOJ claims the Board violated the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 when it removed those voters from the rolls.

It's the first time federal authorities have taken a position on the purge, which was first reported by WNYC on the eve of the primary vote in April. Numerous elected officials and advocates had requested federal intervention since.

The case was originally filed in federal court in Brooklyn last November on behalf of the good government group Common Cause, which advocates for individuals' voting rights, along with two named plaintiffs.

Pisses me off because I personally saw people told they weren't registered when they really were. My brother was purged and a DUer was also purged from the roles as well.

It was done on purpose! Imho not for the presidential race but for the mayor's race.

Whatever their motive it pisses me off they did this.

5. WNYC has some interesting data on the purge.

It seem to have disproportionately affected Hispanic voters.

They also have data on age, party registration, and the relative impact on Sanders and Clinton voters.

9. And the bottom line is they don't think it affected the Clinton/Sanders race

even though hispanics were disproportionately affected. Interesting.

Many of those purged lived in public housing projects and in working class / working poor areas. Those were Clinton voters.

The knee jerk conclusion by some that the purge specifically targeted Sanders ("He was born in Brooklyn!&quot seemed patently ridiculous to those of us here in NY who volunteered for the Clinton campaign. Sanders left Brooklyn almost 50 years ago. He may have been born in the borough, but it was Hillary who had favorite daughter status based on the work that she did during her tenure as a NY senator.
