2016 Postmortem

"Federal Investigation:
At the end of last month, we sent out a letter to federal investigators and Congressional leaders who are looking into interference with this year's election. We believe that the investigations should include investigating security holes in the election systems that allow hacking by Russia or other entities, foreign or domestic. While we have no way of knowing if any election hacking occurred (or by whom) we we wrote to call their attention to many systemic security vulnerabilities in our election systems. You can read our letter here.
Among these vulnerabilities are tabulators connected via modem. This discovery by our investigators on the ground in Wisconsin flies in the face of federal claims that lack of connectivity keeps our electronic election systems safe.
To date, we have received no response to this letter to federal investigators and Congressional leaders.
Wisconsin:
One focus of our work with the Wisconsin recount was to try to get access to the digital images of ballots created by optical scan voting machines, the machines that tabulate votes cast on paper ballots. These images are key to election investigations and by law must be preserved for 22 months after a federal election. Yet in Wisconsin, some counties intentionally destroyed these ballot images! Two of the counties that have admitted to doing this were identified by our analysts before the recount as areas of concern. You can read our press release about this here: Key Election Materials Destroyed in WI Recount. A shareable video version of that press release is on the page as well.
In Wisconsin we also worked on reviewing the thousands of pages of 'minutes' of the recount in preparation for analysis of the election processes and vulnerabilities. This project is not yet complete because -- even though the recount was certified by the State in mid-December -- some counties have not yet submitted their minutes!
Nevada:
While significant attention was focused on the presidential election recount efforts in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, another recount went on more quietly in Nevada. RecountNow sent observers to Clark County (Las Vegas) for the recount there. To their surprise, Joe Gloria, the Registrar of Voters in Clark County, admitted to them that he had conducted a private recount rehearsal. This is in apparent violation of Nevada law. Just this past week we released our report and audio on the Nevada recount and are calling for a criminal investigation. We also released audio of Joe Gloria's admission. The report and audio can be accessed via our press release page: RecountNow Releases Audio Recording of Registrar of Voters Joe Gloria Admitting to Secret Rehearsal of Recount and Withholding Results From Public
Michigan:
Currently we are helping Jan Bendor of the Michigan Election Reform Alliance (MERA) with some research for some possible legal action in Michigan.
Thank you again for your support.
