2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumAll this "let's control womens' vaginas" meme in the GOP about freedom for conservative men from
sublimating their testosterone desires to control women's sexuality, women's time? Does it imply that either men or women have to sublimate to coexist? (women have historically sublimated their various needs to fit cultural expectations until the womens' movement set them free). Cause that is bull****! We have to stop the GOP from re-sublimating women in the name of FREEDOM for men to be hierarchical & immature.

(113,131 posts)of being completely in control over all the women they know. It makes them crazy. This is true whether they're Teabaggers in the US or Taliban in Afghanistan.
Remember, they always declare war against women first, whenever they get into power.

The majority of Christian denominations worldwide (not all), as well as other faiths, are dominated by men, and have been for thousands of years. It's the entire mind-set of male dominance that must be defeated - and as we've see with other social ills (racism, xenophobia, etc), a mind-set dies hard, and slooooowwwly, if at all. If it took us thousands of years to get to this point, how long will it take us to change course? Not overnight, I'm afraid.
It should also be mentioned (as I'm sure that many would agree): I don't see any passage within the New Testament where Jesus mentions the concept that women were to be subordinate to men. If you can find it anywhere in there - again, with JESUS saying anything to that regard - please let me know.

A fascinating book to check out is Elaine Pagel's THE GNOSTIC GOSPELS

It's no accident that today's gospels were chosen by the early church over other, equally important, gospels that empowered women and people in general.

Being 45 at the time, there was a lot of family tradition involved. My parents and sister did not take it well at all. Luckily for me,I had some good friends who had already quit over reproductive rights issues who encouraged me and gave me support.
