PRESS ADVISORY PRESS ADVISORY PRESS ADVISORY
LOS ANGELES HOMEOWNERS ANNOUNCE UNITED FRONT AGAINST BANKS ON 1 YR ANNIVERSARY OF OCCUPY OUR HOMES
Los Angeles City Hall - Southern California homeowners who are defending their homes from banks will assemble on the Los Angeles City Hall lawn on the 1 year anniversary of Occupy Our Homes to announce that homeowners throughout the greater Los Angeles area will be uniting together to fight wrongful foreclosure. It has been over 100 days since the Hernandez family of Van Nuys was scheduled to be evicted by Bank of America. They remain in their house after choosing to barricade and defend their home with the support of their community and the Occupy movement. For the Perez family of Anaheim, it took 45 days of negotiations to receive a fair loan modification and save their home. In East LA, Margarita Lucero reached out to Occupy Fights Foreclosures after seeing first the Perez family and then the Hernandez family on the news. The Luceros have defied the odds and stayed in their home 55 days past their eviction date. Last year in California, 1.2 million homes were foreclosed on and another million homes to be vacated by the end of 2012. There are many other homeowners fighting banks, like Richard Castalto, who are and letting the public know that they have been successful where the courts and elected officials have failed: by occupying together.
This is about showing resistance, not just to the banks, but to the system entirely, because the politicians, the lobbyists, the banks, the courts, the LAPD, the sheriffs, are all working together on this big scheme to defraud everybody of their right to housing. This is about making a stand for the millions of homes that have already been lost. This is a stand, an action after the fact, but it's also for the ones that are going to continue to be lost, for the jobs that have been lost, for the jobs that will continue to be lost, for the homeless people who are out on the streets when we have empty homes.
