(38,437 posts)To save time, let's just is it's pure bullshit.
But, it sure is great comfort food to those who are certain that they have already died from GMOs. (How does that work? GMOs are killer foods, but no one is dying?)

(14,120 posts)And they have a large lobbing group in government to keep there monopoly in play.
And there are test being done to see what could be happing in the way of long term use.And the findings are scary.
You know, much of the argument about the effects down the road remind me of what the tobacco industry used about second hand smoke a long time ago. It took a long while to get the message out, to get people to listen. But then we started to see the damage as well. Are we going to wait to see or look closer at what many independent studies are finding now? I would rather error on the side of cation.

(14,177 posts)I would at the very least like GMO foods labeled so we can make informed choices. The fact that the proponents for GMO foods refuse even that is very telling about how safe they really think their product is.
Lady Freedom Returns
(14,120 posts)You would think if they were proud of their product, they would want it plastered on everything. Yet they want to hide it. They have lobbyist that are working overtime to keep from having to place it on labels.
Things that makes one go "Hummm".

(38,437 posts)The problem is that as soon as the GMO disclaimer shows up, those who are planting the seeds of hysteria will be waving these labels as if they were a skull-and-crossbones.
This is the ONLY reason why there is a demand for labeling.
The onus should be put upon the paranoid people to prove that these foods are dangerous.
Lady Freedom Returns
(14,120 posts)We also have the Right not to be lied to about what is in what we eat.
If GMO is in the food, we have the Right to choose to buy it or not. The corporations have no right to hide it from us. Just like they have to tell us if their is something that could cause a allergic reaction, they must be made to tell us this. We have the Right to know.
Buzz Clik
(38,437 posts)The question is why do you suddenly have an interest in the genetic makeup of your food? Were you ever interested in the past to know if some odd gene slipped into the DNA of the food you were eating?
Knock yourself out.
I will not worry about anything that has absolutely no evidence of being harmful.
Lady Freedom Returns
(14,120 posts)I don't like corporations pushing this on us when studies are coming out that says that we could see damage up the road.
Have we not done enough on future generations? And why does John Q. Public have to be the test subjects? They pushed to use GMO's before enough long term studies were done. Now we have to set back and see what we did to our grandkids again!
Then, let's look at what is going on due to cross pollination and pattens. Just because a bee that does not know what a patten is flying between two different farms and one does not grow the licensed plant, they get in trouble due to holding back their seeds. Why? Because they are no longer the same plants that you grew. They are someone else's due to a DNA Patten.
The whole thing is wrong.

(20,234 posts)why don't they want them labeled?
Buzz Clik
(38,437 posts)Ok.
Lady Freedom Returns
(14,120 posts)Why hide?
Then add the independent studies that are coming out. Many show some disturbing results. Some of which we may not see, but our children's children have the privilege to hope not to see.
We have the Right to know what we are eating and all the info on it. Yet the industry is doing its best to quiet the info and force it's product on us.

(38,437 posts)This is better: "I have a sandwich for you, but I will not tell you what breed of chicken from what state was used for the eggs in making the mayonnaise." If I had a raging fear of eggs from Rhode Island Reds, this would be a problem. For rational people, not so much.

(20,234 posts)are you a bug? You are to Monsanto's eye.
Why exactly do you have a problem with at least labeling them?
Buzz Clik
(38,437 posts)The only people who demand these labels are those who are afraid of GMOs.
Corn is corn. If the corn has something in it that has demonstrated ill effects, I should know. If not, why bother? (Yes, I know -- fear of the unknown. Not good enough.)

(38,437 posts)Your unfounded fears are the only reason for wanting these labels in the first place.
I would shut up about this in a heartbeat if one of you ever coughed up definitive proof of health effects, but it never comes.
My suggestion is to help start a niche market of guaranteed non-GMO foods, and buy only those foods.
Vincardog
(20,234 posts)to prove they are dangerous, when you deny they should be labeled so we could test and prove the danger?
Your argument reminds me of the Government saying:
"No study has ever proven the health benefits of Marihuana.
It can't be legalized.
You can't do any studies on MJ cause it is not legal."
This circular argument goes no where.
Why don't you admit you have something to gain from GMO's?
Buzz Clik
(38,437 posts)We have one poster on this thread saying how he/she read all this scary stuff, and then lists a dozen effects of GMOs. The problem? It's all bullshit. Not unlike the video in the OP.
These foods HAVE BEEN STUDIED (just as marijuana has been studied, by the way).
This is ridiculous. There is no argument that can defeat irrational fear. So, wallow in it.

(14,120 posts)We can not know what is in things without labels. They let us make a decision to buy or not. From what the calorie count is of the food to where a product is made.
For people to make the decision of what they put in their bodies they need to know what is in it. If they want to eat GMO they can find that product. If a person wants to steer clear of GMO, they can read the labels and not buy.
It is the Civil Liberty of it being our body that is the question. Do we or do we have the right to control what goes in our bodies. Not putting information on the label about GMO's being in food is blocking that Right.
Generic Other
(29,000 posts)Just like we believe thalidomide causes birth defects, that mercury or lead can poison us, that red dye #10 is carcinogenic, etc. etc.
I have read dozens of frightening articles about many of the problems this film touched on:
The cross-contamination problem that leads to farmers being sued for having Monsanto seed in their fields. I've read dozens of examples of bankrupted farmers. From an economic standpoint alone, untested GMOs are disruptive to agricultural practices that allowed humans to survive since the Neolithic Era.
The mysterious bee deaths have been reported for sometime. There are many who believe there may be a link to GMOs.
The suicide deaths of Indian farmers who were convinced to grow BT Cotton making news in India of late.
The new resistant insects and weeds that farmers are encountering in GMO fields.
The cozy relationships between lobbiests, regulators, lawmakers, and judges which allow corporations to act in ways that benefit them financially even when they fail to take public interest into consideration.
I don't know how anyone can say there are no potential serious risks involved with GMOs.
The bottom line is that as humans we have the right to reject the Frankenscience. We are not obligated to accept chemical contamination of our foods. We have a right to choose organic products over GMO. And a right to know when our foods are altered, since some of us will not think they are fit for human consumption. We are learning about the benefits of good nutrition every day. If we believe Monsanto is poisoning our food supply, we have the obligation to raise objections. If their business practices are robbing us of the ability to feed ourselves, it is imperative we stop them.
You reject as bullshit the possibility of genetically altered strawberries with fish genes in them? So do I, so keep them, off my dinner table.

(14,120 posts)And if memory serves me, was there a time when Smoking was considered OK? How long did it take to get the Government to listen to the studies about how bad it was?
When it started to harm enough people down the road to make them.
I don't want to use the future as Corporation ginny pigs any more! Place the label and allow us to make our own decision till we have a true, un-bias amount of study info.
BTW the FDA gets lobbied to pass stuff. Look at some of the meds out that have been passed with not enough study on their risks.
