A new strategy in community activism

(maybe not "new", but uncommon)

"taking protest into the heart of communities normally insulated from race and class conflicts"

River Oaks is an exclusive "old-money" neighborhood of Houston. (George Bush has a house there.). It didn't initially allow Jews to live there, it still doesn't (afaik) allow Black people to live there.

"Protests against the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the Trayvon Miller murder are planned for Sunday, July 21, 2013 in the heart of River Oaks, one of Houston’s most exclusive neighborhoods. Led by Houston civil rights activist and tireless flakcatcher, Quannell X, protesters plan to march through the tree-draped boulevards of multimillion dollar homes and sprawling estates that are home to Houston’s “old money” dynasties.

Counter protests are planned by a new group formed by Jon Smith, the “G. Zimmerman River Oaks Stand Your Ground” posse, consisting of second amendment activists and proponents of Stand Your Ground (SYG) laws. SYG supporters are being encouraged to attend via a Facebook page that freely acknowledges the “potential for violence”. “Free Republic”, a popular national right-wing website, is also publicizing the the counter-demonstration. Some pro-gun protesters are talking about showing up armed to assert their second amendment rights.

River Oaks is a popular Houston cruise, where you can get a closer look at how Houston’s "old money" families live. The neighborhood was established in the 1920s, before the rich felt the need to retreat into gated communities. The very openness of the neighborhood makes it an uncomfortably strategic venue for this Sunday’s clash of cultures."

should be interesting....
