On Tuesday, three activists were detained by NYPD officers outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art after disrupting a gala honoring David H. Koch. The controversial billionaire was being fêted for his $65 million contribution to the newly reopened museum plaza, which prominently bears his name (see Protesters Crash Koch Plaza Opening at the Met). The three activists, Kyle Depew, Grayson Earle, and Yates McKee, were caught projecting images from a customized art truck onto the museums façade that read The Met: Brought to you by the Tea Party and Koch = Climate Chaosreferences to Kochs well-known role in funding right-wing and climate-denying groups.

The three activists were ticketed for illegal advertising. They really should have charged us with bothering a rich persons dinner party, Earle told artnet News, because thats what its really for.

(2,178 posts)The whole point was to confiscate the equipment to prevent further actions by the group. Of course, the charges will be dropped, but the damage is done.
This illegal bullshit is standard practice for NYPD as well as others. A lot of this went on with OWS, and we will see more of it, until the officers who perpetrated this face personal loss.
I am pro-Union, but Police Unions are notorious for protecting these miscreants.
As far as honoring David Koch, it's his Money they honor. At least Andrew Carnegie built Libraries for the people. Koch builds monuments for the Wealthy.

(7,222 posts)They weren't projecting messages promoting a product or service, that's advertising, they were making a statement, that's free speech. They should get a lawyer & sue.
If dollars are considered free speech, then photons are damn well certainly free speech!

(86 posts)If money is speech, sue and see how sorry they are for violating their civil rights. Better hurry though. The Koch's have probably already hired the Supremes to find that the Bill of Rights only applies to corporations.
Thanks for this information, ellenrr. I hope the young men can pursue this/sue NYC. David Koch and his NYPD goons need to learn the real meaning of Freedom of Speech.

(484 posts)Turtle man McConnell bemoans the attack on 1st Amendment rights that he envisioned in the vote to end the Citizens' United ruling, and yet confiscating a projector until after a convenient time in relation to the climate talks is deemed OK. Who are the real 1st Amendment betrayers?
