(456 posts)I was a heavy smoker and overweight. It was suggested that I had suffered TIAs (mini-strokes) in the past and not be aware of it.
I was in a nursing home for 6 months until my body recover enough to start physical therapy. I joke about that time as me being at the airport in the long term parking lot.
My 85 year old Dad visited every week, and grab/squeezed my hand and told me that I would walk again. The support I got from my Dad/Family is the reason I am walking today.
Your son WILL recover and your SUPPORT will help him on the path of recovery

(21,646 posts)of relief that he is going to be OK because the quick timing he got a drug to stop any clot and get blood flowing again saved him and younger stroke patients are more likely to benefit from this early treatment

(1,296 posts)We are in Wenatchee hospital genes the Skype to harbeeview (yes harberview is good ) but the problem they are having is his age and he doesn’t smoke do drugs rarely drinks no real reason for this to come on but I did ask about the possibility of previous unknown strokes and the nurse said about the mini strokes
The only risk factor is I have a dual hereditary blood clot factor that means he carries 1 but they are still trying to figure out. If it’s s strike the whys so far he hasn’t responded differently to the medication
I so appreciate the posts

(109,801 posts)remain with hospitalized patients, even overnight. I had to be very pushy about this a few years ago, when my daughter was hospitalized. They were telling me there wasn't room enough for me, because of the roommate, but I knew the hospital's own "Bill of Rights" says that a family member is allowed to stay in the room with a patient. So I sat in a folding chair half in and half out of the room all night. The next day they discovered that there was a single room available after all, big enough for me to stay with her from then on.
You and your hubby must be utterly exhausted though. I hope one of you can go home and get some sleep.

(1,296 posts)At the moment it’s quiet and texting on my phone to as many posts as I can is helping
I know that many Du members are up all night it seems
I will be fielding multiple texts and calls from concerned family members in the morning ( my daughter was doing most that while he was in the ER)

(2,138 posts)He has youth on his side, and probably good health. He will probably come through just fine. My sister had a mild stroke a couple years ago at age 67 and she is just fine now. Modern medicine does miraculous things these days.
Please keep us posted on how he does.

(1,296 posts)With a specialist in harberview ( once they got it to work) that was something never saw that done before even with my large family but having had my dad at Harberview I know they have good docs there and they will consult with the ones here
The specialist was even a bit puzzzled I understood the docs and nurses here saying he was the youngest Theve ever had as a stroke possibility but the harberview guy say it’s rare that’s something but the younger age I guess gives them hope

No Vested Interest

(109,801 posts)It sounds like they think he had a mild stroke caused by a blood clot, so they're giving him a blood thinner to get that taken care of, and they're doing tests to see what else, if anything, might be the matter.
If this was a stroke, the good thing is that you caught this while it was still mild and got him to the hospital. The doctors and nurses will know how to take it from there. But as a mother of young adults, I know how hard it is to just sit there helplessly and have to wait. There's nothing worse than having to go through something like this with our children.
thinkingagain
(1,296 posts)I am familiar with heparin also. I had a P E years ago due to a blood clot and my youngest sister also found out we carry a genetic factor for it (rare double one) so my son would carry the single gene
But they also thought he had some narrowing of blood vessels in his neck
They did say they did not see any bleeding on his brain

(7,947 posts)No wisdom here. But the best thing is that they've identified the problem. Now you can deal with it, along with medical science! The worst thing would be not knowing he has this condition.
Hugs to you! He will be better in the morning, and they will probably send him home with medicine and instructions!

(6,675 posts)As hard as it is, please be sure to take good care of yourself through this difficult time.
My son was diagnosed with cancer a week after he graduated high school. There were many months of stress through surgery, treatment and testing, and years of worrying about recurrence. He is now 37 years old and I just got back from visiting him and his wife and daughter in Japan where they work for the US State Department.
There is a healthy, happy future ahead for your son, thanks to great medical care and the loving support of family. Be sure to celebrate even the tiniest bit of good news or spark of recovery, because those moments will add up, layer upon layer. One day you will look back on this time as a frightening episode in the past and recognize that, as a family, you all survived and thrived.
All the best to you

(1,296 posts)They just “food & drink” tested him he did fine do no restriction from the speech therapist.
So that is a positive.
He’s been wanting to eat since he arrived last night😊
Plus the nurse said his niece & nefews could come for short visits 😊that’s good because they are pretty close to their uncle.
Also the dr this am said we did pretty good on time line on getting him to ER as every minute helps. ( I posted some stuff this am in general discussion regarding this situation )
At moment I’m feeling a bit more positive but not enough to leave and go home and sleep.

Dr said she needed to ask him some Questions.
Dr.: Who is our current president?
J: I don't know, some idiot.
Dr (laughs): can you tell me his name?
J ( short pause): do I have to say his name?
Dr: yes. I'm actually going to ask you the names of the last 3
J (sigh): Trump
Dr: and before that?
J: Obama
Dr:and do you remember who was before that
J: yeah, Bush

(1,296 posts)I had looked at that before but it doesn’t have a couple of my local races at least as far as I can tell I was going to check one more time. What’s really frustrating is the local paper doesn’t have it either so far I’ve tracked down some of the more local stuff.
Just a bit more to go.
