Their 6-year-old was killed with a neighbor’s gun. A court just decided how much his life was worth

Anthony Senatore never disputed leaving his rifle under his bed, unsecured and loaded.

The New Jersey father pleaded guilty in 2014 to child endangerment after his 4-year-old son accidentally used the gun to shoot and kill Brandon Holt, a 6-year-old neighbor, at Senatore’s Toms River home, according to NJ.com.

So far in 2016, at least 95 children younger than 18 have picked up a firearm and accidentally shot themselves or someone else, according to data from Everytown for Gun Safety, a gun-control group funded by former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg. The advocacy group, which compiles shooting data using news reports, found that 278 such shootings occurred in 2015.

These aren’t accidents,” Everytown says. “They’re preventable. More than two-thirds of these tragedies could be avoided if gun owners stored their guns responsibly and prevented children from accessing them."

How many more children must die because gun owners exercise their Second Amendment "rights" to be irresponsible? It is time to take action and enact legislation which will make gun owners responsible for the storage and use of their lethal weapons. Allowing a child access to a gun is NOT an accident -- it is murder.

If we can't take even that simple step, it's yet another piece of evidence that we need a clean sweep of Congress.

do all here really think the small country hamlets of the goobers and gomers publicize the firearm fatalities the way more populated areas do??

I have extended family in the Ozarks area - alcohol and 20-30 guns in a house with 10k rounds of ammo not at all uncommon in the area - do the math.......

When I stop for gas at a small station/convenience store in one of the yokel towns and ask the attendant 'hows it going?' the typical reply is 'great - haven't been robbedat gunpoint in almost 3 months...'

Please have the decency to stay off of this thread, and not give us the NRA line on why something like this shouldn't matter in setting national policy on gun control.

Any adult who leaves a loaded gun(s) out, and a person under 18 gets it and shoots someone else will be tried for either assault or murder, depending on the injury. 258 lives would have possibly been saved last year if this was law, or conversely the adults involved would be severely punished.

Seems totally fair and should decrease this type of death. Also, no infringement of so called 2nd amendment rights.
