According to emergency officials, Colbert 911 was notified of the shooting at 4:58 p.m. Reports indicate the child was inside the house, found a loaded pistol and the gun went off after he picked it up.

Colbert County District Attorney Bryce Graham Jr., said the indictment is not about the Second Amendment or gun ownership, but recklessness and irresponsibility.
Im a gun owner; we are privileged to live in a country where you can own a gun, Graham said. But this is about being responsible with that gun.
There is a tremendous responsibility (to owning a gun), and this is about irresponsibility that cost a child his life, not whether they have a right to own a gun or not.
About effin' time. These "law abiding citizens" need to be held accountable for their negligence. When it comes to deadly weapons, which are purchased and kept handy because they are lethal there are NO accidents.
The bullshit about 'punished enough' and 'it couldn't have been prevented' or 'it's an accident' doesn't fly with me.
That said you have to read the statements made by the defense attorney. Just more gun fetish crap about privacy, self defense and rights.

(6,641 posts)gun culture is in full view here with a statement from the defense attorney:
He actually said that. To Second Amendment absolutists, responsibility for their lethal weapons is not required by the Second Amendment, and therefore carelessness and neglect are protected "rights."
This asshat and all NRA/ILA/GOA apologists are essentially saying that a 2-year old child has no business wandering into a strange bedroom and picking up a dangerous shiny thing. It is obviously the child's fault for this tragic "accident." The "responsible" gun owner had absolutely no obligation to secure a deadly weapon inside his/her own home because Freedom and Liberty.
The term "responsible gun owner" is an oxymoron for a large percentage of the purported 80,000,000 armed citizens of this country. Like all other consumer products, guns need to be regulated for the safety and benefit of ALL Americans, and until that happens children will continue to be victims of irresponsible and idiotic absolutists.

(10,020 posts)it should be against the law to be stupid and have a gun... but since we can't even weed out the mentally ill, I don't know how we'll eliminate the stupid.
I commend the grand jury and the District Attorney. When people have to do time, pay stiff fines, have probation, etc., maybe we'll have fewer of these tragic avoidable 'accidents'.

(14,559 posts)It's because most guns have trigger pull pressure of 7 pounds or more. Little children don't have the strength in their first finger to pull the trigger so they turn the gun around and use their thumbs. The ergonomics of handguns are such that small children will turn the gun on themselves so they can get their thumbs on the trigger.

(34,087 posts)Trigger locks and unloaded. As a gun owner I see no reason for a round in the chamber until needed.

(2,902 posts)They also prevent those gun owners from using those things in "self-defense" since the gun won't fire. Won't fire.
