I'm really starting to like Massachusetts AG Maura Healey.

First she went after assault weapons manufacturers who made minor modifications to their guns to make them "state compliant" by saying that the basic functions and interchangeability of the "compliant" guns made them restricted under the state's Assault Weapons Ban. Just because ya' paint it blue don't make it compliant.

Now she is going after Glock and Remington under the state's consumer protection act saying that their products are subject to dangerous accidental discharge. I'm not familiar with the Remington, but the Glock has a very short trigger travel (technically called 'creep') and a light trigger pressure. The combination makes the gun prone to firing when being removed from or placed into it's holster. It happens so often that there is a name for the injury in gun circles, "Glock Leg Syndrome" http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Glock%20leg. She has asked for company records on consumer complaints and, predictably, the two gun makers are suing to prevent providing the information. Guns are exempt from the Federal Consumer Protection Act but not from State laws. Once again it seems that the battle for gun sense can be won at the state level if not at the Federal.

This is the way things should be done. Instead of trying to ban dangerous weapons by name, appearance or features we need to look at the functionality that makes them dangerous. Right now Healey is limited to working within the state's gun ban law wording but if we look at what makes the assault weapon dangerous it is the function of very high cyclic rate combined with a magazine that can be replaced in less than a second. The same is true of semi auto pistols. Instead of arguing over features and the "ugly black gun" ban the functions. No more semi auto guns with quick change magazines.
