Commentary: Nevada extremists at intersection of gun violence and land seizure movement

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Center for American Progress, in partnership with the Institute for a Progressive Nevada, released a report Thursday analyzing the rise of anti-government extremism in the United States, anti-government groups’ focus on efforts to seize public lands, and the use of guns as the weapon of choice for violent anti-government extremists and domestic terrorists.

The report also explores how the dangerous and violent rhetoric of these anti-government extremists has served as inspiration for even more egregious acts of violence, including the assassination of two police officers in Las Vegas in 2014 by a married couple who had visited the Bundy ranch during the standoff.

Anti-government extremist groups have proliferated at an alarming rate over the past decade, and a core tenet of many of them is a call to take up arms against the government. For many of these groups, federal government control over public lands has been key focus and a primary target of their armed insurrections.

These incidents and the growing use of guns as the weapon of choice for violent extremists, hate criminals, and domestic terrorists also highlights the need to enact strong laws and policies to help keep guns out of the wrong hands. Nevada has also fallen short in this regard, having among the weakest gun laws and highest gun death rates in the nation. However, voters in the state will have the opportunity to close one of the biggest gaps in the state’s gun laws through a strong new law requiring background checks for all gun sales that will be on the ballot this November.

A fine example of "responsible" gun owners taking advantage of their Second Amendment "rights" to advocate the overthrow of the US Government. Let's allow these asswipes to have all of the guns they want with no comprehensive background checks, and carry as many guns in public as they can -- at least that's the right-wing tea-bagger, Ted Nugent NRA "gun rights" mantra.

These are the core gunners that the NRA/ILA/GOA/ALEC right-wing gun lobby protects and enables. Hell, these people ARE the face of the gun culture in the United States. They carry multiple guns for "self protection" from the gubbmint. These are the "average gun owners" that we are encouraged to trust and support.

Vote for Democrats who see this fear-mongering and irresponsible behavior for what it is, and have the courage to vote for meaningful gun control.

our local media as well as the State Politico's,for the most part,are and have been using all available sources to pander and promote their agendas. We have the worst educational system in the U.S.,and in that lies many of the cultural changes needed to change mind sets.

Bottom line,what does it take to get reelected in Nevada. Tons of moving parts,but the real one is the Culture of the State and who controls the levers of power. Hint,NV Energy,Sheldon Adelson,Steve Wynn,and other Casino Moguls.

We are a very Transient State with a turn over every seven years and in that lies a situation were the people in Power use the newbies to maintain their dominance thru propaganda.

that has been infected by these right-wing extremist gun-hugging tea-baggers. Although the commentary is from and about Nevada, it could have been written about any one of several red states.

4. This has been the Game Plan of the Republican Party

since the Election of FDR. We are seeing the same Wealthy Families who tried to over throw FDR by force,are now using their wealth and influence to over throw our Country via the Courts and Ballot Box.

Yes there are many States are in the same Political shape as Nevada,one thing we have is a large and growing class of Immigrants who now have their voting rights and are in the Majority Population wise. In the previous Election Cycles,the power that be were able to mitigate their voting strength. From what we see today,Trump has activated the new Voter to registrar as Democrats and are backing Hillary. Most of the Polls are only tapping the Anglo segment and from what I see in the polling data,have not touched the Hispanic or Asian segments to any extent. Could be by design,been down that road in the past.
