Gun control group targets firearms owners with new ads, seeks common ground

Some things just seem to make sense, like no-brainers that everybody can agree on, right? Yet it doesn't work out that way. Almost 4.5 million children are exposed to unsecured loaded guns in America EVERY DAY. As a result 8 children are injured or killed as a result of finding them EVERY DAY.

Why? Why can't we agree to make it illegal to leave guns where children can find them? It is an accepted fact that people will tend to obey laws. That's why gun owners endlessly recite the "law abiding citizen" phrase, right? Not all but surely most otherwise speed limits and stop signs would be useless, right?

I can't figure it out. All the NRA videos depicting home defense show safe storage habits with guns secured in key pad access gun safes yet they won't issue a statement of support for laws mandating safe storage or reporting a stolen gun. The official NRA stance is "no comment" and behind the scenes there is open opposition to such laws. Why can't both sides of this issue agree on this one simple thing?
