Why we need gun control and the origins of this group
If we could have a group avatar, this would seem appropriate:

(6,057 posts)BUT......NRA literature and certifications were discovered inside the home.
Among other items the NRA Guide to the Basics of Pistol Shooting and NRA certification for Lanzas mother Nancy.
Oooops, Mr. Lapierre!

(6,057 posts)But it got enough attention..... that the NRA felt they had to lie about Mrs. Lanza's membership.
You can't get "NRA Certification" without being a MEMBER of the NRA.
Adam and his mom "are the NRA" alright.

(21,022 posts)I pulled out a student packet for NRA Basic Pistol. Being an NRA member is not a requirement nor is membership given through the course. There are brochures included on becoming a member.
I checked into some of my competition. There are some instructors who do include membership "Free" as a benefit of taking the course. The NRA has a program where instructors can offer reduced rate memberships and get a kickback for each student who signs up. It means the instructor pays about $15 to give away this "free" offer. The instructors who do this seem to charge $15-$25 more than those who do not give away membership.

(3,731 posts)Having an NRA certificate doesn't mean your a member, in CT. you have to go through a Basic Pistol Course to obtain the handgun permit.
Here's CT.'s statues for obtaining one.

That's probably what the police found in the house.

(6,057 posts)Puhlease, I used to be NRA certified to teach the Basic Pistol and Law enforcement approved courses. Believe me..... NRA doesn't issue you their blessings (in the form of certification) without membership.

(3,731 posts)it's a certificate saying that you completed the course, not a membership certificate.
On edit, I humbly stand corrected, the fee also includes a 1 year membership.
Sorry for doubting you.

(6,057 posts)And may I ask what state would accept that for a CHP?
Trunk Monkey
(950 posts)As a matter of fact I only took the class so my wife wouldn't have to take it alone, I could have turned in my DD214 and met the training requirement.
I wouldn't be so quick to imply that another DUer is a liar unless you are conversant with the gun laws of all fifty states
rdharma
(6,057 posts)..... not a 'CHP'. And it's very clear when you look at the requirements that ANY military experience is accepted.
A NRA "Firearms Safety Course" does not require NRA membership ..... but Colorado specifies "handgun training". And you need to be an NRA member to get that...... like Mrs. Lanza was.
I'm not calling you a liar....... it just sounds like you're not sure of the facts ....... and at the same time trying to give the NRA cover.

(2,282 posts)Maybe it depends on the county? For example, Boulder County has a CHP:

Below you will find the following information to guide you: application, information packet, required fees, procedures and guidelines for the program. To apply for a concealed handgun permit, you will need to bring the following to your scheduled appointment:
Colorado drivers license or state ID
a completed unsigned application
your original certificate of firearms training issued within the last ten years (acceptable firearms training includes: NRA, Hunters Safety, proof of organized shooting competitions, DD2-14, Active Duty Orders)
$52.50 to CBI (MONEY ORDER OR CASHIERS CHECK ONLY)
$60.00 to the sheriffs office (cash, personal check, money order or cashiers check)
Damn I wish I was always right
Edited: BTW where exactly does it specify handgun training?

(2,282 posts)and received a course completion certificate that has an NRA logo on the certificate. It is extremely common. An actual NRA certified instructor would know that. You didn't know that. ergo ....

(3,731 posts)don't really care one way or the other. A permit to own a firearm isn't required in my state so I have no idea how it works, I'm just posting CT's requirements.

(7,243 posts)the NRA does stand for continuing to enable Lanza and his ilk.
So that is an appropriate avatar.
